Our first post was on July 13, 2018 and exactly two years later, this will be our last. While our space is no longer open to the public, many of the amazing leaders and instructors who brought The Mama Cocoon to life are still active in the community. with . As a Black woman and mother who had predominantly lived in areas with little to no black community or representation, I think it's important to spread resources. And baby wearing support! Love all the specialized guest speakers is bringing into her awesome series!!! 💚💛🧡

My favorite accessory was always my baby but our journey to happy baby wearing was tough. I was told to use wraps but found them clumsy and always dragging on the floor. I tried more supportive devices but always thought baby was being crushed in an unnatural way. I always had thought I would baby wear but with all the frustrations, I almost gave up! Then I found help and tried different things and we both ended up loving it! Thank goodness because it was lifesaver when I had my second baby!
There are so many documented benefits to babywearing, but from a infant development specialist, my number one right now is that it prevents flat areas on the head.



So because I remember the challenges and because it is so important, I’m bringing my newborn parents help!
Internationally renowned baby carrying expert and industry consultant, Laura Brown will be zooming into my virtual newborn class on Thursday. I get questions a lot about introducing baby to food. I loved this milestone with my babies and yet it can be absolutely terrifying when you are unsure about choking, allergies, etc. I’m so excited that I get to have my friends and former colleagues from Children’s Hospital LA, come by my virtual infant class this Thursday. They are Occupational Therapists and the experts on introduction to solids and baby led weaning. .

Did you know babies practice moving while sleeping? The brain uses active sleep phases to practice and perfect movements (like rolling) that they are learning during awake time. So once they start trying to roll, it’s time to unswaddle them and get them in a sleep sack to give them plenty of practice time with that rolling while they sleep.

Also according to the American Academy of Pediatrics safe sleep recommendations, “when an infant exhibits signs of attempting to roll, swaddling should no longer be used.”

Love that so many of our instructors have moved their classes to online (Zoom!). For the new mamas, definitely check out Amanda Montoya’s Tummy Time series. My baby did parts 1 & 2 and is so strong, crawling and pulling up on everything at 7 months. We got SO much out of this!!! Lots of great info and ideas to actually make Tummy Time fun!

It just became apparent that we should let our network know that our upstairs office occupant - WestPac Wealth Partners - is a financial advisory firm that is hosting weekly webinars that cover strategies and options for business owners to get through COVID-19 and be able to recover afterwards. Most just don’t know what’s available and out there. They work primarily with private practice Drs and dentists, but the strategies and options they counsel their clients with apply across industries. In fact, they just saved a boutique fitness studio in Austin from having to close - pretty cool!
