Data can change who gets funded. In this final part of the chapter 2 (of 5) story, the purpose of rigorous evaluation becomes clear. If community-defined practices can demonstrate that they work, organizations are better positioned to compete for future public and private dollars. That turns evidence into something very practical: the ability to sustain the work.

CRDP asked communities to innovate and in the process helped build the evidence that allowed those ideas to flourish.

What happens when community knowledge is taken seriously enough to be evaluated? CRDP was built around more than delivering services. It was also designed to test whether community-defined practices could produce evidence strong enough to stand alongside other recognized approaches. That meant bringing together lived experience, cultural knowledge, and rigorous evaluation.

What comes before access? Trust. In this chapter from CRDP: A Decade of Community-Driven Change, the conversation begins with a simple but essential idea: if people don’t trust the systems or people offering care, meaningful engagement becomes much harder.

For Black women and other communities that have historically been underserved, that trust cannot be assumed. The most hopeful part of this excerpt is where the story lands: “We know what to do.” Communities are already identifying what they need to reduce isolation, strengthen connection, and restore hope.

Programs don’t change people as much as relationships change people. Effective care has to make sense in the world people actually live in.

When expectations don’t align with someone’s lived experience, cultural values, or community, even a well-intentioned program can miss the person it was created to serve.

CRDP helped create space for communities to develop solutions for themselves—and to build the relationships that make those solutions meaningful.

What happens when communities are given the resources and time to prove what they already know?

CRDP Phase I began with $63 million and an unprecedented approach: fund community-based organizations serving African American, Latinx, Native American, Asian and Pacific Islander, and LGBTQ+ communities, then evaluate whether their interventions actually worked.

Ten years later, the statewide evaluation came back with evidence of meaningful impact on people’s mental health.

This excerpt connects the original experiment to what was ultimately learned from it.

At first, he didn’t realize the strength and weight of what CRDP could become.

Then came the evaluations, the convenings, and the chance to witness organizations doing this work inside their own communities.

Why CRDP? Fund Communities Directly.
When we were shaping this project, one of the challenges was finding the clearest way into a complicated statewide initiative. Sometimes the story reveals itself in one simple idea.

CRDP did something exceptional: it invested directly in communities already doing the work—and treated community and youth voices as knowledge worth listening to. That became one of the building blocks of the film.
