A tour of Scotland with some fellow whisky fans. ๐Ÿฅƒ๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ‘

A tour of Scotland ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ. The flight represented standards from most of the primary regions of Scotland, did not include a representative from the Campbeltown region.

- Lowland, Auchetoshan
(American Oak, a classic lighter Lowland style)
- Speyside, Balvenie 12yr Doublewood, the iconic fruity, sherry finish Speyside style
- Highland, Clynelish 14, a representative light smoke and peppery highland style
- Island, Highland Park 12 (was debating between HP and Talisker, but HP12 is such great whisky and the peat is a little more integrated
- Islay, Arbeg 10, an all time Islay classic.
Also added a few other classics to add depth to the whisky analysis
- Highland, Oban 14yr, another Highland classic!
- Island, Highland Park Cask Strength (it is sooo good, we had throw it in the mix)
- Islay, Lagavulin 16, another Islay classic to compare to the Ardbeg.
- Islay, Lagavulin โ€˜Distillers Editionโ€™, because we had it!
- Islay, Caol Il, a non peat Islay version that was surprisingly tasty!

- a couple of surprise entries for comparison. Coopers Choice selections from Ledaig and Allt A Bhainne.

It was bottled after the Civil War, but tests show it was likely made in the late 18th century, offering a glimpse into early American distilling.

Our March Whiskey, Stories and Lies selection included 5 whiskeys led by a story about the nefarious aphid (phylloxera) that created an expanded whisky market and sherry cask aging 100 years ago.

Here is a short summary of our musings:
- Aberlour aโ€™bunadh: cask strength, tasty with heavy sherry notes and worthy purchase for the price.
- Laphroaig 10: peaty, salty with some sweetness; a great dram for those who like a cigar in a glass and worthwhile buy.
- Dalmore Cigar Malt: not peaty, rich and full with dark fruit notes, would great with a cigar, but not sure it should be consumed along side the Laphroaig ๐Ÿ˜, a solid buy, but a little pricey
- Sullivanโ€™s Cove, Single Cask: the Tasmanian devil, a very tasty whisky with heavy vanilla from the 'merican oak barrels, highly recommend, but difficult to get and very pricey at $360
- Whistlepig Piggyback: a tasty 6 yr old rye produced for mixing with some good spice and full smooth flavor, a definite recommend and good buy.

Westward is a boutique American whiskey crafted in Portland Oregon. We compared the single malt barrel and the stout cask finish. The stout is a bit sweeter in the palate but both have good depth. The single malt palate presents some leather and malt, and tastes just a little young compared to more aged whiskies. Both are worth a try if you are interested!

Today is Robert Burns Day! Make sure to collect some fellow whisky enthusiasts to enjoy a grand tradition!
Burns Night brings to mind forkfuls of peppery haggis and wee drams of whisky. The Burns Supper is a celebration of the life and legacy of the Scottish poet Robert Burns. While it was first organised by his close friends and family as a memorial dinner, the night has since morphed into an event for Scots at home and around the world. It is celebrated with traditional Scottish fare, folk music and renditions of Burnsโ€™s poetry โ€” but this year many of the festivities will be virtual.

Some Interesting historical info for whiskey fans: Known as Uncle Nearest, Nathan "Nearest" Green has been acknowledged since about 2016 as the first African-American master distiller on record in the United States. He taught Jack Daniel to make Tennessee whiskey and served as the first master distiller โ€“ formerly called "head stiller" โ€“ for the Jack Daniel Distillery. He was reportedly instrumental in developing the Lincoln County Process, the charcoal filtering method used to make most Tennessee Whiskey.
