Happy World Opossum Day. Celebrate it with our Tater and Waffles. 😁 Tater is our retired Ambassador and Waffles is working her way into the roll.
Some fun facts:

They are true “Living Dinosaurs”. Fossil records reveal that the modern opossum has remained largely unchanged for roughly 65 to 70 million years. They literally walked the Earth alongside Tyrannosaurus rex. How cool is it that they survived for so long under so many changes in the world.

North America's Only Marsupial: The Virginia opossum is the only native pouched mammal found in the United States and Canada. Giving birth to up to 20 young who when born are the size of a bee and stay in the pouch for 3 months attached to the same ni**le the entire time. Though the mom only has 13 teats, meaning any that do not attach will not survive.

They have a Built-in Rabies Resistance: It is quite rare for an opossum to contract rabies. Because their core body temperature is unusually low (around 94–97°F) compared to other mammals, the rabies virus cannot easily survive in their bodies.

Please consider becoming a sponsor or donating to our rehabilitation or ambassador programs.

The recent release of the Barred Owl that recovered with us after being hit by a car. We called the family who rescued this beautiful owl and they met us for the release. Very grateful for those who care enough to stop and help. I love when we can include them in the releases.

With fall here we thought we would slow down. Unfortunately many new admits have kept us very busy. Here are a few of patients.
Barred Owl hit by car-now in flight cage and ready for release. Great Horned Owl, fell out of tree, thin but no injuries-went to larger enclosure and soon to flight cage. Broad winged hawk, believed to be hit by car-head trauma and still guarded prognosis but seeing improvement. Pigeon, attacked by a hawk and recovering. Juvenile squirrel found alone, cold and hungry. Warm and resting and doing very well. Mom Opossum with 6 babies hit by car. One baby did not survive; however the other 5 are very healthy and doing great. Mom was in pretty rough condition and we were uncertain she would pull through. X-rays showed no fractures and no fluid in lungs or any other internal damage. Two broken canine teeth but not a concern for her. After slow syringe feedings and rest we are so happy to say she is up and eating and becoming very active. Babies are with her and all are starting to eat on their own. Also a Beaver that was attacked and after few days in care it was transferred to another facility and is recovering.
Please consider making any sort of contribution to our program to help us care for so many injuries and mostly due to unintentional human conflicts. Thank you

Here’s to some of the wildlife that comes through our doors. Such a rewarding job when you can see them grow, heal, or recover and go back to the wild. Not everything is on our license but if we have space and the ability we help when we can and try to transfer to another organization that does work with those species. Shout out to all those who care enough to call us. ❤️
