Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) can be a valuable addition for therapists interested in offering a gentle, specialized modality. MLD uses light, rhythmic techniques to encourage lymphatic fluid movement. It’s best-established clinical role is helping manage swelling associated with lymphedema, including some cases following cancer treatment.
For massage therapists, it can broaden services immediately opening the doors for new clients , provide an option for clients who may not tolerate deeper pressure, and be less physically demanding than many massage techniques.
But training matters. Unexplained swelling can signal a medical problem, and MLD may be inappropriate with conditions such as blood clots, active infection, certain heart conditions and kidney failure. Therapists need to understand contraindications, screen clients appropriately and know when to refer.
Ready to expand your offerings? Look for quality MLD courses that cover lymphatic anatomy, hands-on techniques, screening and safety. Therapists who want to work with diagnosed lymphedema, oncology or complex post-surgical clients should pursue advanced specialized training and understand their scope of practice.
