Rev. Jesse Jackson was a giant of the Civil Rights movement. He cared about people. Despite being a giant, he was accessible. Always available to attend birthday celebrations for members of the PUSH Family or just stopping by to visit a dear friend whose health was failing. Your kindness will be missed. Until we see you again, we'll do our part to "Keep Hope Alive!"

In 1966, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. appointed Reverend Jesse Jackson to lead the Chicago chapter of Operation Breadbasket, the economic division of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). Operation Breadbasket aimed to promote Black entrepreneurship and advocate for equitable, inclusive business practices with major corporations. Reverend Jackson assembled a group of local Black business leaders to discuss their perspectives and develop effective strategies. My father, Argia B. Collins, Sr., served as a founding member of the Food Spoke Division of Operation Breadbasket. Notable businesses involved included Argia B’s MUMBO BBQ SAUCE, Parker House Sausage Company, Baldwin Ice Cream, Conway Cleaning Products, Grove Fresh Orange Juice, Joe Louis Milk Company and many others. Argia B’s MUMBO BBQ SAUCE marks 75 years as Chicago’s original Chicago-Style barbecue sauce brand, partly due to Reverend Jackson’s advocacy and influence. Ads for a few of the brands featured in the Black Expo program book circa 1970 shown below.

Today marks what would have been my father's 100th birthday. I’m honored to begin Black History Month by recognizing him and his lasting legacy. My father valued both family and community. He championed small businesses, believing they are essential for sustaining and strengthening African American neighborhoods. I am proud of his ingenuity and his creativity. I admire his resilience and his dogged determination to fight for a place in a retail marketplace that was adept at extracting but was often unwilling to trade. I am grateful for the many lessons learned by example so that now, 75 years later, Argia B’s MUMBO SAUCE is still a beloved brand by all of you. Thank you.
