The near side of Luna.

This piece will be available at auction this weekend at the Cosmosphere’s Everything Under the Stars event!

NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter been studying our Moon since its mission began in September of 2009.

Data from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter was converted into an STL file that can be printed on a 3D printer. NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center created the 3D file that was used in the creation of this unique piece of jewelry.

The topography on this pendant has been exaggerated to show differences in height. 1 cm (.39 inches) equals roughly 50 km (31 miles) of the lunar surface.

Our Moon’s near side is smooth, the result of incredible lava flows that covered the lunar surface during the formation of our Moon. The far side did not have this lava activity, so more craters are visible on its surface.

The first humans to see the Moon’s far side with their own eyes were the crew of Apollo 8 during their historic Lunar orbiting mission in December of 1968. The last humans to see the Moon’s far side were the crew of Apollo 17 in December of 1972.

It was fun making a piece like this. I’ve never done anything that can be worn reversible, so it was a new challenge! The bezel portion is made out of Sterling Silver, and the other components are in brass. The cabochon Moonstone is set in a silver bezel.

🎫 VIP: Enter EARLY at 5:30 pm. VIP entrance and valet parking are at the main entrance of the Cosmosphere.

🎟 General Admission: Doors open at 6 pm. The General Admission entrance is North of the main entrance and will be clearly marked.

Parking 🚗

🎫 VIP: Please pull into the Cosmosphere's main parking lot (11th and Plum) and a volunteer and directional signage will be on hand to direct you to VIP Valet Parking.

🎟 General Admission: Please use the parking lot on 11th Avenue South of the Cosmosphere (both the paved and grassy areas are ok) or the parking lot at Stringer Fine Arts Center on 11th. To drop off guests prior to parking, follow the directional signage to the General Admission entrance. A volunteer will be on hand to direct you.
