Update: Our proposed new space fell through last night. Any leads are appreciated
This may be a little long post but I want to be openly human to my clients, friends and followers.
Last June my husband and I were on our delayed honeymoon on a lovely cruise relaxed and full of life when I received an urgent message from my current building owner. They were insistent in notifying me that day that our beautiful and charming historic building was being sold. Thier dad had passed earlier in the year and although the building was in trust they decided to reverse this and sell the property along with a few others (not upset that they chose to do this)My heart deflated as I sat at our dinner table enjoying my evening. I was crushed
My lease and the leases of the other tenants were all up for renewal and they placed us on a month to month lease with 30 days notice. The past year+ has been very stressful and a roller coaster juggling how many events, how far out do I book, how much do I take on, should my purposeful business carry in. It’s been emotional and often confusing. I also work full time, so operating knowing I could be given 30 days notice at anytime and if I was given that notice how would I honor my clients celebrations, pack and close because it has been very difficult to find a location with the charm that our space has…and at anytime affordable price….and in the right area.
Fast forward to the past few months when the current owners reduced the price on the building. Although they’re right is to sell as the owner, they have not been transparent or communicative that there was a buyer. In fact, it was announced at a business owners meeting that the building was sold yet the tenants were not informed. One tenant asked them face to face if it was under contract and were told no. I was able to verify it was in fact under contract. To follow that, there has been a very braggadocios man and entourage that has walked throughout the building and very vocally expressed regularly that he will be opening a restaurant, smoke shop and other businesses in the building. It’s been very clear his plans do not include us or the cafe in front of us. He has never said hello, introduced himself or expressed any plans to us. This solidified his plans don’t include us. I amped my search up yet again for a suitable spot. Btw…he still isn’t the owner while he has done this.
On Sept 26th, the proposed new owner entered my space with a group of men to include a contractor. They did not provide notice nor did the current owner know. The current owner gave a specific directive that day that no one is to enter the building without notice to them, the tenants or without thier agent. The very next day a contractor was in the building again. Today, my cameras go off yet again showing the contractor from the 26th was inside of my rented space. No announcement, notice and no agent. When they left, they left my door wide open and i had to have the cafe owner owner lock my door. The agent said the proposed new owner denied that he had anyone in the building yet it was his contractor that I have on camera both times in my space. They also deny that anyone has a key. I had no choice but to provide video and a report of trespassing to the Carrollton police. Carrollton police advised that if this occurs again to call 911 immediately and that whoever is my space will be arrested for criminal trespassing.
I gave notice last week to the current owners as I have found a new space. I’m simply sharing the disheartening journey that I have been on for the past 15-16 months with my dear little business. I’m just the little guy who has had a passion to touch people’s hearts and provide a space to celebrate special events, share smiles, memories and laughter. If my smile or spirit haven’t been as big as usual, now you know why. We are finalizing all of the details for our move and we won’t be far.
