Jerome John Garcia, known professionally as Jerry Garcia, was born on August 1, 1942, in San Francisco, California, United States. He was an American musician, singer, songwriter, and guitarist. He was best known as a founding member of the Grateful Dead. His work included rock, folk rock, psychedelic rock, blues rock, country rock, bluegrass, and folk. He recorded with Warner Bros. Records, Arista Records, and other labels during his career.

Jerry Garcia helped form the Grateful Dead in 1965. The band became known for its live performances and long musical improvisations. Their catalog includes well-known songs such as "Truckin'," "Casey Jones," "Sugar Magnolia," and "Friend of the Devil." The group was one of the most recognized names in American rock music.

Outside the Grateful Dead, he led the Jerry Garcia Band and worked with several other projects, including Old & In the Way, Legion of Mary, Reconstruction, and the Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band. He also recorded solo albums and worked with musicians from many musical styles throughout his career.

His work received many honors after his lifetime. Jerry Garcia was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Grateful Dead in 1994. His guitar playing, songwriting, and live performances continue to be studied and appreciated by musicians and listeners around the world.
