Well it has been a year since we last turned on the open sign, fired up the grill and pizza oven and served our beloved customers.
I miss my staff and customers immensely. I am always thankful to run into the random person and have a quick trip down memory lane.
As much as I am positive I made the correct decision on not reopening, I still feel the sadness of my decision.
This is a picture my wife had drawn by a local artist. It hangs in my home as a reminder of such a large part of my life .
I would love for you folks to share some of your fondest memories that took place at Shawn’s.

Dear Valued Customers and Friends,

It is with great appreciation and a lot of sadness, that I must announce that we have decided to permanently close Shawns Irish Tavern in South Toledo. I have poured my own sweat and tears into Shawns Toledo for the last 24 years of my life, and I am very sad that this is the outcome that we have come to.
Please know that this decision was not one I took lightly. It has been an ongoing conversation within my home and with my family for the last few months. When the fire happened on December 9, I was adamant that we would reopen. It was never my intention to lead anyone on or make false claims. I did truly believe that we would rebuild. As time went on, it became apparent to me that it would be harder than I believed, both physically and financially.
I am sure the rumors will start soon, if they have not already. For those of you thinking I am taking a giant insurance payout, I promise you that is false. If there would have been a huge payout for me, I promise you it would have been a lot easier to walk away, had that been true. My family and my health are the only two reasons this decision was made (and no, I am not sick.) Starting over from scratch is just something I do not have the energy or desire to do again. I am no longer the young man that worked the long nights and served your drinks for years. I am twenty-four years older, and desire to live a slower paced life.
For those of you who supported me, believed in me, and let me into your families over the last twenty-four years, I truly thank you. It has been a joy in my life to get to know you all. I will miss our conversations and banter. We will still be serving your favorite drinks, sandwiches and dinners in Waterville. Some of you already do, but I would love to see more familiar faces visiting from Toledo.
I hope you will look back on your time at Shawns, and on me, with a fondness and a smile, and if you don’t feel that way now, hopefully you will in the future. Our motto over the years has always been, “You Are Only a Stranger Once.” I will take that motto into my personal life now. Please greet me with a smile if you see me in a store or on the street. Please know that I will miss Shawns Toledo and you all, more than you can know. God Bless you all.

I mentioned the Waterville location as I am the owner of that store.
However Ryan Kahler , a long time coworker and friend, is the owner of the Sylvania location. He is open operating a great business and if that is closer to your location I would hope you would support him as much as you have supported me.

First off,
I miss all of my customers and I can speak for the rest of the staff as they do too!

I appreciate all the well wishes and concerns. Shawn’s being closed has been a topic of conversation daily wherever I go. This past week the Lucas County Health Dept. Released a list of restaurants that did not renew their license to serve food.
We were on that list and some people have assumed it is because we are not reopening. Quite the contrary, but because of the scope of changes we are going through we need to start from the beginning and go through the whole planning process.

So I am here to say we are going to reopen but patience is key.

I look forward to seeing you all again inside the walls of Shawn’s.

Recently there has been a lot of folks asking for an update about Shawn’s on Heatherdowns. I apologize for not updating sooner but the truth is there is not much to talk about.

The inside is an empty shell of what used to be a beloved second home to so many including myself.

The outside is being reconstructed including a new roof and HVAC units.
Once the roof is complete and everything is “dried in” we will be able to start demolition and rebuilding. This is where I do not have the answers. It is going to take time and patience.

I want you all to know how much I miss my staff and customers. I didn’t realize how much I took for granted that Shawn’s would just be there.

I miss you all and hope to have better news in the future. (Pray for Mother Nature to be helpful)

As most already know, there was a fire at the Colonial Village Shopping Center happened early this morning. As of now, there is just speculation as to how the fire started, but it does not seem to have started inside of Shawn’s. However, Shawn’s was heavily damaged. The roof is gone in areas, but the main damage is from smoke and water. As of now, we are just trying to access the damage and figure out our path forward. We will be closed for the foreseeable future. As soon as we have more information or a reopening date, we will let our customers know.

If you happened to take a mitten from our Giving Tree, the drop off point will now be St. Pat’s of Heatherdowns, right across the street. You can drop presents off anytime between 8-4. Of those times don’t work for you, please message us and we can make other arrangements. The tree and all of the presents under it were not touched by water, and have been dropped off to St. Pats already.

Thankfully no one was inside the building and no one was harmed. The only thing destroyed was stuff, all of which is replaceable. Thank you for your continued support and prayers over the years. We will need them more than ever now. We will update here as soon as we have any new information.
