So, to address the whale in the room: Yes, the Mermaid, sadly was forced to close its doors this past Monday. We are writing this to clarify the reasons for this decision, as we were surprised by the media attention and speculation on social media. We had been engaged in on again, off again lease negotiations with the Landlord while facing constant challenges with maintaining the 70+ year old wood-frame building. We had spent around $300k over 12 years in repairs and renovations on someone else's building and after 150 roof patches, the roof needed to be completely replaced. Water damage had contributed to a termite infestation and created a mold/mildew smell that was affecting customers and staff in the past 6 months particularly. Correcting the issue would require closure anyway and a LOT of money. Instead of making any allowances or proper repairs, the property owner wanted to increase rent by another 50% over the next 10 years and was requiring approximately $45k of additional deposit/collateral immediately. During the negotiation we had been operating on a week-to-week agreement, so when it became clear that we were at an impasse there was very little advance notice for anyone involved. Sorry to close and then bore you all with details, but it was an amazing and wonderful ride. Almost 12 years cannot be considered anything but a great success in this business and we love each and every one of you who called Mermaid home! On a side note, we may be back somewhere someday! We have had an outpouring of offers of new space and will continue to look at options! Thanks for the Mermories!
