𝐎𝐅𝐅𝐈𝐂𝐈𝐀𝐋 𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐓𝐄𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐅𝐑𝐎𝐌 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐅𝐋𝐎𝐑𝐈𝐃𝐀 𝐁𝐀𝐈𝐋 𝐀𝐆𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐒 𝐀𝐒𝐒𝐎𝐂𝐈𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍
The Florida Bail Agents Association (FBAA) has been closely following the tragic events in Wesley Chapel, Florida. Since the incident was first reported, members of our association and Florida’s bail community have been working to gather accurate information and better understand the circumstances surrounding what occurred.
What is known is that three bail professionals went to an apartment in the course of returning a defendant to custody following a failure to appear. Gunfire erupted, a bail bondsman was shot, and responding Pasco County deputies were placed in an extraordinarily dangerous situation.
Those facts alone serve as a sobering reminder of a reality that much of the public never sees: 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐅𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐚’𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐚𝐢𝐥 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐲 𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐤𝐬.
Today, however, is not the time to focus on procedures, policies, or the mechanics of fugitive recovery.
𝐓𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲, 𝐅𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐚’𝐬 𝐛𝐚𝐢𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐡𝐮𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠.
When tragedy strikes one bail professional, it is felt throughout our entire profession. We are more than agents and agencies operating across different counties. We are colleagues who work beside one another, attend conferences and meetings together, exchange calls at all hours, share our experiences, and support each other through the challenges of this profession.
The Florida Bail Agents Association extends its thoughts and prayers to the family, friends, coworkers, and everyone directly affected by this heartbreaking tragedy.
We are also deeply grateful to the Pasco County deputies who responded to an extraordinarily dangerous situation and placed themselves in harm's way while working to protect others, even one of our own.
The dangers faced by bail professionals are too often overlooked because much of our work takes place quietly, behind the scenes, and outside the public eye. Every day, licensed bail agents across Florida enter unpredictable situations while fulfilling their responsibilities to defendants, families, the courts, and the criminal justice system.
This tragedy is a painful reminder that behind every badge, license, agency name, and bond written is a person — a husband or wife, a father or mother, a son or daughter, a friend, and a colleague who deserves to return home safely at the end of the day.

A standoff at a Wesley Chapel apartment complex ended after a man wanted on felony charges opened fire on bail bondsmen and law enforcement officers before taking his own life, according to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office.
