“The Best Main Street in the Coolest Small Town in America starts at The Sykesville Station!”
The Town of Sykesville was awarded “Coolest Small Town in America” in 2016 by Budget Travel magazine and the “Best Main Street in America” in 2020 by Independent We Stand.
A little history… in 1831 the B&O Railroad extended it’s “Main Line” through Sykesville but since Sykesville had yet to be named it was called “Horse Train Stop”. Businesses started moving into the area including new mills, churches, stores, and a post office. Unfortunately, much of the town was destroyed by a flood in 1868 but the town started to rebuild immediately and most of the buildings still exist today. In 1883 this “Sykesville Station” of the B&O Railroad was designed and built by E. Francis Baldwin, a famous architect from Baltimore. The Station was opened to its first passengers in 1884 and served our little town of Sykesville, giving people an escape from the heat of the city.
In the 1920’s during Prohibition, the town was split into “Wet” and “Dry” Factions. The “Dry” were those who campaigned for the prohibition of alcohol while the “Wet” were those who lived it up in speakeasies and concocted illicit gin in their bathtubs. Sykesville was one of the first places in the state to repeal prohibition in 1933 and today we still enjoy drinking amongst friends in our local watering holes.
