Pizza + wine = pure joy.

A steaming hot pizza paired with the right bottle of wine is one of life’s simple pleasures. Pizza is a complete meal featuring nearly all the major food groups, it can be simple or highly creative. Pizza is communal and brings people together as does wine. All of this can be raised to a new level when paired together and it’s pretty easy.

Considering pizza is simple, unpretentious, and universally loved, some of the best wines to pair with it are every-day Italian table wines. These wines tend to be low-tannin, bright, and savory-fruited and usually easy on the wallet. Big, tannic, or structured wines (California Cabernet, Zinfandel, Bordeaux, or even Brunello) can come across as overpowering with pizza and should be saved for another meal. Everyday Italian reds such as Barbera, Dolcetto, Chianti, or a Montepulciano Rosso work great as they pair well with tomatoes, feature dark and savory fruit, and some earth notes. Think mozzarella cheese, pepperoni, mushrooms, and onion to name a few. Want to be adventurous? Try a fruity Lambrusco with pizza, the bubbles add a refreshing component and work great. These wines are flexible enough to work with a veggie pizza or pesto.

We eat a lot of pizza in our house and love to experiment with pizza and wine pairings. We’ve come up with a great list. When pizza night comes up at your house, be sure to have some tasty wines ready so you too can experience the pure joy of wine and pizza.

The simple pleasure of wine and pizza.

A bottle of wine and a steaming hot pizza is pure joy. Pizza is a complete meal featuring nearly all the major food groups and can be raised to a new level of enjoyment when paired with the right wine. Certain every-day Italian table wines are often the way to go as they are authentic, easy-drinking, and easy on the wallet. These wines tend to work best with the core ingredients of pizza, such as tomatoes, mozzarella, or spicy, earthy, or savory flavors.

When pizza night comes up at your house, be sure to have some of these tasty wines ready.

Fan-favorite North Hill Pinot Noir is back!

Fans of Pinot Noir from the Willamette Valley in Oregon will no doubt remember North Hill Pinot Noir. This shop favorite wine is made by Bill Holloran, who hand-crafts many fine Pinot Noirs at his winery in the Dundee Hills. This wine is only created when unique circumstances come together, such as a vintage with high yields, extra juice that’s available for a great price, or in this case perhaps the pandemic is also playing a supporting role. Whenever this wine is made, we jump at the chance to grab as much of this incredible value as possible.

The 2018 vintage North Hill Pinot Noir demonstrates elegance and freshness and at the hand of winemaker Bill Holloran, he generates a classic note of savory red fruit that is both soft and smooth. There’s a nice hint of spice on the finish and it is classic Willamette Valley Pinot Noir at a price that will make you smile. For price and quality, this wine has no equal.

If you are a fan of Pinot Noir, do not miss this great wine for $14.99.

Lip-smackingly good rosé for a song.

These days call for a thirst-quenching rosé that is dry, vibrant, and refreshing. And one that won’t break the bank. We’ve found another winner from Spain that hits all those points – and more. Arrumaco is a rosé of 100% Garnacha.

The wine starts with a pretty and floral nose that leads into a fresh and vibrant wine that has soft, subtle fruit notes of raspberry and plum. The best part of this wine is how brisk and refreshing it is. It begs for another sip and then another… At only $8.99, this is a no-brainer!

This is a wine to load into your refrigerator, get it nice and cold and then just try to keep the glasses topped off when you are ready for a civilized refreshment.

There’s also the option of an eco-friendly 3L bag-in-box, which is the equivalent of 4 bottles but at an average cost per bottle of only $6.50! Just pull the spout and place in your fridge for whenever you need a glass. The bag depletes as you consume so the wine will not oxidize.

Don’t miss out on this great value in dry, vibrant, and refreshing old-world rosé from Spain. Place your order and get some of this liquid sunshine before it’s gone.

Congratulations and Good Luck to the Class of 2020!

Finally, some good news. Rosé season is upon us.

Drinking a glass of dry, crisp, and thirst-quenching rosé on a warm day is something we wait through long, dark, and cold months to enjoy. And we sure waited a long time this spring! This warm and sunny weather feels absolutely liberating considering our unique circumstances.

We have been quietly stockpiling a broad selection of new vintage, old-world, crisp, and tasty rosé over the last few months in anticipation of warmer, brighter days ahead. While we know rosé tastes great year-round, there’s something special about enjoying it as we kick-off our warm-weather season.

Treat yourself to this rite of passage into spring and summer-like weather by getting outside and enjoying a couple of glasses of sunshine in a bottle. I know we’ve earned it. Fire up the grill, open up the patio, clean off the deck and sit back, soak up the warmth and enjoy some refreshing rosé.

Contrade. Our best value is back.

We never seem to buy enough. Contrade is back by popular demand and at the same eye-popping low prices. New for this time is a Rose’ offering to go along with the red and white wines.

Contrade is made by the Falvo brothers of Masseria Li Veli in Puglia, in far southern Italy. This off the beaten path region in Italy is home to some terrific values.

Negroamaro is a native varietal to the Puglia region and is little recognized outside this part of Italy. These wines are pop-and-pour, easy-drinking, and full of flavor, terroir, and impressively complex for under $10.

Contrade wines represent amazing value and are worthy of your attention.

Celebrate the season with Grower Champagne.

Champagne adds a festive element to your year-end celebrations and special gatherings. Grower Champagne recognizes the producers who control the entire process from growing the grapes right through harvest, vinification and bottling. The term also reflects producers who own their own vineyards rather than sourcing their fruit or juice via contracts. These are often smaller, family-run domains and the opposite of the corporate culture that has largely taken over the Champagne region. When one’s name goes on the label, there is a higher level of pride and accountability for what’s in the bottle.

Whether you are planning a special dinner party, celebrating a successful year or just treating yourself to the unique bubbly terroir that is Champagne, why not support these small, family-run domains. We have great pricing available on three bottlings from Jean Laurent:

Jean Laurent Champagne Brut Rose' NV ($45.99)
Jean Laurant Champagne Brut Blancs de Noirs NV ($43.99)
Jean Laurent Champagne Brut Blanc de Blancs Reserve NV ($48.99)
