On this day 212 years ago, a young lawyer named Francis Scott Key watched the British pound Fort McHenry through a rain-soaked night—and saw, at dawn, a massive American flag still flying. Moved by the sight, he drafted verses on the back of a letter aboard a truce ship, calling his poem “The Defence of Fort M’Henry.” Set to the popular tune of “To Anacreon in Heaven,” it spread quickly—first as a broadside, then through newspapers—long before Congress made it the national anthem in 1931. What many don’t know: the 30-by-42-foot “star-spangled banner” that inspired him was stitched from about 400 yards of wool bunting, so heavy it took a dozen soldiers to hoist, and its maker, Mary Pickersgill, worked overnight with her household to finish it in time for the attack. Key’s words captured a fragile young nation’s endurance during the War of 1812 and gave Americans a shared ritual—hand over heart, eyes on the flag—that still binds stadiums, schools, and ceremonies coast to coast.

Our Auxiliary would like to express our deep gratitude to the thousands of VOLUNTEERS, RESCUE WORKERS and FIRST RESPONDERS who selflessly gave their time and strength at Ground Zero, the Pentagon and Shanksville following the tragic attacks on September 11, 2001.

Post 568 Legionnaire, GARY MAYNARD, we thank you for a lifetime of answering the call. From service in Vietnam with the United States Navy to service as Fire Chief in St. Joseph Township to volunteering at Ground Zero following September 11th. We are forever grateful.
