Autumn Hill Vineyards - Fall Barrel Tasting
Deep in rural Green County, in the Northwestern corner of the Monticello AVA, Autumn Hill Vineyards has been cultivating grapes since 1979. This is significant in the grand narrative of Virginia wine, because there were so few vineyards in the state at that time. By some accounts, Autumn hill was the Commonwealth's tenth vineyard and at least half of those have long since closed their doors. Initially, the grapes were sold to other wineries, but in 1986 the first Autumn Hill vintage was released. Like many wineries in the state, Ed and Avra Schwab started Autumn Hill as a hobby. The first wines were produced in the garage in an effort to determine if it could even be done.
Winemaking knowledge in those days was in pretty short supply. A cooperative spirit developed among the handful of vintners and that same collaborative attitude exists to this day. Autumn Hill established especially close ties with Barboursville, which is one of Virginia's winemaking rockstars. Shared knowledge contributed to improved quality, which ultimately resulted in the 1991 Autumn Hill Cabernet Sauvignon, which won double gold in San Francisco. Today we might not find that so amazing. After all, three Virginia wineries brought home double gold from this year's competition. Twenty years ago, however, that was a remarkable feat. So I guess you might say, Autumn Hill has been in the game and more than survived. They have excelled.
