This past year has been quite a ride for me, both personally and professionally. I have come from the lowest feelings of disappointment and chronic illness, to the highest feelings of joy and thankfulness.
About a year ago I developed plans to expand the Golden Cue into our adjacent vacant space, investing a considerable amount of time, effort, and resources. Unfortunate timing for us, our landlord simultaneously received a very attractive purchase offer for her entire property. It was an offer she had to seriously consider, so she asked us to immediately stop our project. Escrow was opened, and although we were very disappointed, we did not feel defeated. There was still hope … if the deal fell out of escrow, we could continue the project right where we left off.
For months we were unsure if escrow would close or not. There had been numerous delays due to permit and licensing issues, government agency requirements, and contingency issues between our landlord and the potential buyer. However, on November 3, 2016, I received a message stating that escrow had finally closed on November 2, 2016. The new owner plans to convert and modernize the entire property, giving it a trendy strip mall facelift, featuring multiple retail and commercial tenants. In order to accomplish his vision, he needs to incorporate all of the space that the Golden Cue currently occupies. He has offered me a fair compensation package if I agree to terminate my upcoming 5 year lease option.
Many of you recall that I was diagnosed with heart failure in 2002 and received my first heart transplant in 2004. I was very lucky to receive a donor heart and count my blessings every day. Unfortunately, most donor hearts only last an average of 10 years. In 2014-15 I again began having symptoms of heart failure, including shortness of breath and lack of stamina. Again, I was placed on the heart transplant list and on April 21, 2016, I received my second heart transplant (blessed a second time with the miracle of life). I still have a few challenges ahead of me, but I am making very positive strides in my recovery . Your sincere offerings of comfort and support along with your heartfelt messages of positive thoughts and prayers are, and have been, greatly appreciated. It continues to give me great strength during my recovery.
It is with mixed emotions that I make this announcement. I have accepted my new landlord’s offer to terminate my upcoming lease option. I have come to the realization that I should take advantage of retiring while I still have the physical ability to enjoy it. Depending upon the new landlord’s construction schedule, the Golden Cue will close it’s doors for business sometime between December, 2016 and January, 2017. The experiences we’ve shared at the Golden Cue have been some of the highlights of my life … it’s been a grand adventure!
Thank you for sharing this fantastic 28 year journey with me! Keep loving pool and I’ll see you down the road,
Ken Hoshide
