The joy of owning an ancient building…

Just when you think you’ve fixed everything that can be fixed in this old gal, she decides to play a mean Halloween trick on us. We had a critical infrastructure issue last night, and though Marcus is working his behind off today trying to get it fixed, we just don’t think everything will be done in time to open. Rather than waffle back and forth or wait until the last second, it best to give him time to truly fix it and then clean up all the messes. As frustrating as it is for you, our valuable patrons, know it is a million times more frustrating for us. But we love this old building and are working hard to keep it going for another century.

We sincerely apologize for the interruption in service, and we deeply appreciate your patience with us.

Just a reminder that we are closed to the public for a private event tonight. Thank you for understanding that these (rare) closed events are critical for guaranteed revenue generation.

Tomorrow will be our first fall Sunday, though! So you’ll have bonus hours to visit us if you’re feeling peckish.

Friday is the night to come to Smyrna! Tomorrow evening, we have a private event so you won’t be able to indulge in our tasty food for that evening. That’s why you better get in here tonight.

The seasons may be changing but we’re still making the most of what we can get from our local farmers. As we shift into the colder months, we will learn to eat with the seasons—AND we will begin to pull fruits and things we preserved from the summer bounty. So, never fear. There’s still plenty of flavor here.

I’ve been on an ice cream making kick so we have a wide variety to choose from. Plus, Ashlie, our trifle queen, made a festive pumpkin cheesecake for you.

And did I mention our new seasonal cocktail menu is now out in the wild? Come try these new drinks and let us know your thoughts. The first few weeks are always a test run as we hone in on recipes.

IMPORTANT SCHEDULE ANNOUNCEMENT:

We have some closure dates approaching, and we wanted to be sure everyone is aware of when we are open and closed!

This Saturday, we will be CLOSED for a private event. We know it’s a disappointment when we aren’t open for you. But events like these are critical to revenue generation in an industry that is extraordinarily unpredictable right now. We deeply appreciate your understanding when we do this to ensure we can meet all our financial obligations.

October is also crazy for our students and parents who are staff. They are up to their eyebrows in band, color guard, games, Girl Scouts, competitions, and of course, trick or treating! SO, to give them all a break, we are taking the last week of October off. In full transparency, us owners need a little time off, too. Our entire team has been working very hard, and if you see my car at the restaurant, you know I have been there literally non-stop. Our collective mental and physical health is of top priority for me as a boss and leader. So, we are giving ourselves that break!

BUT! We are bringing back Sunday hours to see how they go. We will give it a few months for folks to get used to the newly added day. If you like it, let us know!

Thank you so very much for understanding. If you’re familiar with our operations, you know our team means the world to us. There’s still plenty of fun and food ahead, even with a day off here and there.

“Our” band kids took first place in ALL the things today. Since we’ve owned the restaurant, there have been so many wonderful band members that worked here and still do. Always some of BHS’ smartest, funniest, and kindest students. Despite the fact that their demanding band/color guard obligations make our scheduling a nightmare in the fall, we love to see them perform and succeed. Huge congrats to our current band kids on their big win: Johnathon, Gray, and Sam! We’re very proud of you.

Folks, it’s been a long couple of weeks for this gal. The sunshine is just about the only thing keeping me afloat. But I’ve finished my prep, and we’ve got an awesome lineup for dinner.

First, let’s talk cocktails. Our new specialty cocktail list rolls out next week because I didn’t get our liquor order yet. So, thanks for your patience as we get through the weekend without one for you to peruse. Don’t know what you want? Tell us your favorite flavors and we will mix something fabulous!

For an appetizer, I made a Greek Plate that features some of the dips from our recent Mt Olympus dining experience. I actually have dairy-free versions of almost everything so just ask! And pita dough is rising and will be made fresh when you order.

How about venison with elderberry syrup? The elderberries were given to me by a new patron who runs an awesome website dedicated to rebuilding a barter-trade-relationship-building community so we support individuals instead of big corporations. Livlo.co. She also brought me real chestnuts so those are awaiting a brainstorm on what to make!

The beef is so delicious with fresh pasta. Just like the beef and noodles of our childhoods but a million times better. Tons of fresh veggies are still coming to us from Paulson’s and Full Hollow, too.

We have some tender scallops for you—perfectly cooked with hints of white w**e and lemon and butter.

And let’s talk about desserts. As loath as I was to pay for a new ice cream machine, this thing is amazing. I’ve made 4 ice creams and sorbets today!! You won’t even know which one to pick because they are all literally frozen perfection.

I’ll get pics posted tonight or tomorrow. I’m just trying to ensure I don’t lose my mind in the meantime.

A note of gratitude for everyone who climbed Mt. Olympus with us this weekend. You hopefully laughed, learned, imbibed, and filled your bellies. It was wonderful to see you all at our table!

Professional pics will be up soon. And I am putting the script into a PDF that I will make available on our website or email to anyone who wants to read it.

Our staff (and I) worked our tails off, and on Sunday night, we decompressed together. They literally built a campground in the restaurant. We ate frozen pizza, chips, popcorn, slushies, w**e, and lots of candy, as we watched bad TV and celebrated our hard work. I love this team!

In the next few days, we will post about our our October schedule, announce the next Dining Experience, show off some event shots, and preview the weekend specials. In the meantime, enjoy these few pics of the aftermath… (bonus points if you love the movie I am explaining to the kids in the last image as much as I do!)
