PROUD TO BE PART OF THE CLUB

When we opened 'The O', one thing we were incredibly intentional about was the sign that hangs outside the front door. The iconic, yellowed plastic and metal PBR b**r sign that we hung outside is a relic of the past.

These retro b**r brand signs originated in the 70s and were hung outside neighborhood bars — most famously seen across the Midwest — as a aggressive marketing push by breweries to lock down working-class tavern loyalty.

Brewery salesmen offered these illuminated, double-sided projecting signs to tavern owners completely free of charge, often even covering the installation costs.

An estimated 2,000 of these signs were originally installed throughout the Midwest. Though many have vanished due to businesses closing or modern ordinances banning protruding sidewalk signs, the surviving signs remain beloved cultural time capsules.

As a working-class neighborhood bar, it was important to us to find one of these old tavern signs and hang it outside the front door to give folks a sense of what they're gonna experience when they visit The Orion Pub - a throwback b**r bar with wood paneling on the wall, classic b**r brands on tap and whole hell of a lot of character.

Getting the sign up wasn't an easy feat. These signs are expensive to buy and difficult to find - especially in good condition - and the city won't let you put 'em up unless you gut the insides and install safer, lighter LED lights. Not to mention, we had to find a sign company that was willing to install the sign and not try to force us to buy a new sign from them, which was a bit of a challenge as well (kudos to FASTSIGNS for their help making it a reality).

Our iconic Orion Pub PBR sign is a point of pride and a nod to the working-class neighborhood taverns that came before us! Cheers!
