Throwback Thursday 🌾

Before it ever became a hashtag or a memory shared in photos and paintings, The Shack stood quietly on the marshes of Bonnet Island as one of Long Beach Island’s most beloved landmarks.

Originally built in the 1920s as a simple hunting cabin, it was later moved in 1957 and slowly took on a life of its own—not because it was grand or polished, but because it wasn’t. Weathered, leaning, and perfectly imperfect, it became a symbol of LBI itself: humble, coastal, and deeply rooted in the rhythm of the bay.

For decades, “The Shack” greeted visitors arriving to the island—a rustic welcome sign that felt more like a feeling than a structure. It showed up in countless paintings, photographs, and postcards, becoming one of those rare places that defined the spirit of a destination.

Then in 2012, Superstorm Sandy took it down. But like so many things tied to LBI, its physical form was lost while its memory only grew stronger.

Today, it lives on in artwork, stories, and shared nostalgia—a reminder of the island’s history and how even the simplest places can leave the biggest impression.

Some landmarks are buildings. Others are memories you can still see when you cross the bridge. 🌊
