Traffic Circle, Entrance to Long Beach Island, Ship Bottom, New Jersey, circa late 1940s.

A linen-era Tichnor Bros. postcard view of the now-famous, often cursed, always present LBI traffic circle, promoted on the reverse as the modern entrance to the “six happy, healthy family resorts of Long Beach Island.” One known example was postmarked from Beach Haven on July 6, 1949, placing the image and card firmly in circulation by the summer of 1949.

Most recently, the often chaotic traffic spot on LBI was completely eliminated and replaced by a modernized square intersection with traffic signals. The removal was part of the multi-phase, multi-year NJDOT Route 72 Manahawkin Bay Bridges Project designed to alleviate seasonal summer traffic and reduce accidents.
