Mario’s Marina Bar

Mario’s Marina Bar Mario’s Marina Bar is a must-stop destination for Highway 101 travelers, Lost Coast Trail hikers, and anyone exploring California’s wild North Coast.

On the edge of the Pacific, Mario’s offers sweeping ocean views and a relaxed coastal vibe. At the edge of the Pacific, Mario’s offers sweeping ocean views, a relaxed coastal vibe and a front-row seat to the weird and wonderful charm of Shelter Cove. After a long period of closure and minimal upkeep, Mario’s reopened in 2023 with a renewed vision. The space was revitalized with an artful nod to i

ts history and to the generations of locals, fishermen and travelers who came before, restoring its role as a true community anchor. The revival was led by photographer and designer Heather Van Gaale, whose eye for storytelling shaped a refreshed nautical-meets-Lost Coast aesthetic. Subtle maritime details, fishing-village textures, and coastal motifs were added throughout the space, honoring Shelter Cove’s deeply rooted fishing community and the character of the cove itself. Reconstruction was spearheaded by her life partner Eric alongside a talented group of local craftspeople, blending fresh creative energy with a deep respect for Shelter Cove’s maritime heritage. Supported by a beloved team of locals who helped build momentum, Mario’s quickly re-established itself as a welcoming gathering place serving craft cocktails, local beers, hosting live music, and celebrating the rugged beauty and eccentric spirit of the Lost Coast. Mario’s Marina Bar remains one of the region’s essential stops for coastal adventurers, road-trippers and lovers of the ocean.

After a 3 year closure … the wait is over .. ocean recreational salmon returns to California’s North Coast !!
If 5100 chinook are caught , season closes early.

Some of our favorite days are the ones when the parking lot starts filling up before sunrise. The season is almost here and we’d love to welcome back the fishermen and the energy that makes this place special. We're still working out planning and solutions and hope to have some solid answers soon. We are also working on a vendor market.

We loved sharing space with Arts at Heart … ♥️ our friends and neighbors and the 30 artists who make it so special 💫 The closure has affected the creative community and that matters to us.
We’re working on bringing the gallery over to the motel space as soon as permitting is complete. ⚓️

We want to share a quick update with our community.

Following a complaint-based county inspection, Mario's Marina Bar & Arts at Heart Gallery is temporarily closed while we complete a required engineering review.
As part of that process, the County is requiring evaluation by a geotechnical engineer.
As soon as the property is cleared and deemed safe, we will reopen.

It’s tough to see something like this impact the people who rely on this space. Amy Lundstrom from Arts at Heart Gallery and all the talented artists who sell their works here, our chefs Hightide In the Cove, Micah Crumbaugh and McKenzie who had just stocked up on food for the weekend, our site manager Robin, our bartenders Kathy, Jewel and Cassidy, Roland on Karaoke, The Machi family and everyone who has gathered here.

Our focus right now is supporting our team and community by continuing to move forward in a positive way.

We’re working on plans to activate our outdoor space and create something positive out of this moment... so please stay tuned for our outdoor events.

Thank you for the continued support it truly means a lot right now.

Sunday Update:
We’ll be closed today while we line up the kitchen for upcoming Lost Coast Jam Sundays.
Those afternoons quickly became something special with great musicians, excellent sushi and the Cove all coming together.
We’re currently looking for a chef to partner with for Sundays so we can keep the music and community gatherings going.
We’ll keep you updated 🐋⚓
