The Best Walking Route to See Rome at Night

Rome during the day is incredible, but Rome at night feels completely different.

The heat softens, the crowds slowly spread out, the monuments glow under warm lights, and the streets between one piazza and another start to feel like an open-air museum. This is one of the best evening walks if you want to see the heart of Rome without rushing.

Start at the Colosseum, one of the most powerful places to begin a night walk in Rome. During the day, it is crowded and intense, but after sunset it feels more dramatic. The arches are lit, the stone turns golden, and you immediately understand why this monument still stops people in their tracks.

From there, walk along Via dei Fori Imperiali. This is one of the most beautiful stretches of the route because you are walking beside the ruins of ancient Rome. On one side, you have the forums, columns, temples, and broken stones of an empire that once ruled much of the known world. At night, it feels quieter and more cinematic.

Continue toward the Trevi Fountain. Yes, it can still be busy, but seeing Trevi at night is a completely different experience. The water, the lights, the statues, and the narrow streets around it make the fountain feel almost theatrical. It is one of those places where Rome really shows off.

From Trevi, walk to the Pantheon. This is one of the best night stops in Rome because the square feels calmer in the evening, and the building looks even more mysterious from outside. Nearly 2,000 years old, still standing, still dominating the piazza like it was built yesterday.

Next, continue to Piazza Navona. At night, this square becomes one of the most atmospheric places in the city. The fountains glow, artists and musicians fill the space, and the long shape of the ancient stadium is still visible if you know what you are looking at.

After Piazza Navona, walk toward Campo de’ Fiori. During the morning it is a market, but at night it becomes a lively square full of people, restaurants, bars, and Roman energy. It is not the quietest stop, but it gives you a very real feeling of Rome after dark.

From there, continue to Ponte Sisto. This is one of my favorite little moments of the route. Crossing the Tiber at night, with the lights reflecting on the river and the dome of St. Peter’s visible in the distance, is simple but beautiful.

Once you cross the bridge, you arrive in Trastevere. Stop first at Piazza Trilussa, one of the classic meeting points of the neighborhood. At night, this area is alive with people sitting on the steps, talking, drinking, and enjoying the Roman evening.

Then walk to the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere, one of the most beautiful churches in Rome. The square in front of it has a warm, local atmosphere, and the basilica itself feels especially beautiful at night, with its golden mosaics and quiet presence.

Finish at Bar San Calisto, one of the most classic stops in Trastevere. It is simple, local, and full of character. After walking through ancient ruins, fountains, piazzas, bridges, and churches, ending here feels very Roman.

The route:

1. Colosseum
2. Via dei Fori Imperiali
3. Trevi Fountain
4. Pantheon
5. Piazza Navona
6. Campo de’ Fiori
7. Ponte Sisto
8. Piazza Trilussa
9. Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere
10. Bar San Calisto

Distance: around 5 km
Time: 1.5 to 3 hours
Difficulty: Easy

My advice is to start around sunset if you can. You will see the Colosseum and the Roman Forum as the light changes, then reach the fountains and piazzas when Rome begins to glow.

50 years ago today, Napa Valley changed the wine world forever. This year marks the historic 50th anniversary of the Judgment of Paris - the legendary 1976 blind tasting that shattered the status quo and put California on the global map.

Before that fateful day, the world assumed premier wine could only come from Europe. But when elite French judges blindly tasted the lineup, Napa Valley's Chateau Montelena Winery swept 1st place in the white category with their 1973 Chardonnay and Stag's Leap Wine Cellars in the red category with their 1973 S.L.V. Cabernet Sauvignon, triumphing over France’s most prestigious estates.

Alongside these top honors were the other pioneering wineries that made this historic moment possible: Clos du Val Wine Co., Freemark Abbey Winery, Heitz Cellar, Mayacamas Vineyards, and Spring Mountain Vineyard. Together, these seven legendary estates changed history.

Half a century later, these seven historic wineries are still defining world-class excellence, and there is no better way to honor their legacy than to experience them for yourself. We invite you to visit these historic estates and hear the stories of the pioneers who started it all, right where it happened.
