Raghni Naidu at Zingari

Raghni Naidu is the founder and owner of Naidu Wines, an estate-driven winery located in Sebastopol, California. She is recognized as the first Indian immigrant woman to establish a winery in the United States. The vision of Naidu Wines is to create a wine that is always limited production, high quality, with a focus on terroir. While working with artists and talented winemakers, who share the same vision, the Naidu family name bears the label to convey the essence of the family and their belief in the freedom to create one’s own path by following your dreams and passions with a tremendous amount of hard work, perseverance and grit.

Born and raised in Punjab, India, Raghni was influenced by her parents’ passion for food and travel. She moved to the culturally vibrant city of Melbourne, Australia at the age of 18 in a quest for independence, adventure and learning. Australia is where Raghni fell in love with Kaushick Naidu, her husband who hails from Chennai, India. In 2006, the Naidu family moved to the San Francisco Bay Area. Following their passion for creating memorable experiences for others and passion for the farm to table lifestyle, the family was compelled to search for land in wine country.

Raghni focused their family’s search in Northern California. This is where she stumbled upon a remarkable Pinot Noir vineyard, which was owned by a second-generation Italian American couple that had planted and farmed it for over 30 years. The terroir was something quality and the fruit was award-winning. This was destiny and the special moment where Naidu Wines was born. In 2018, Naidu family purchased a 10-acre property in Sonoma County’s Russian River Valley, which included a mature 5-acre Pinot Noir vineyard. Raghni officially launched her label in 2020. You will discover small-batch, limited-edition Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Viognier, and Grenache Blanc in an incredibly immersive Napa Valley, Russian River wine country experience. All welcome.

About Mario Schiopetto Wines.

Speaking of wines, there are two daughter lines of this wonderful story and, above all, of the Rotolo’s winemaking art: the Mario Schiopetto line (i Cru) and the Pompiere line, in memory of Mario’s tavern and whose labels report, after a slight restyling, the stylized truck designed by Mario himself and which dressed the first Tocai 1965. And if in almost all the wineries the baseline represents 80% of the production here we work the other way around. Because it’s the Crus who make 85%. “The Firefighter’s line - explains Alessandro - is the fresh line and his concept wants to be very convivial. The specificity is that the wines of this line come from vineyards that have a life of less than 35 years. All Crus instead come from vineyards that are older than 35 years and this makes it clear that the average age of the vineyards is very high”. There are five crus: Friulano, which has always been the most important wine for Schiopetto (55% of the hectares), Malvasia, Sauvignon, Pinot Grigio and finally Pinot Bianco, which is the second wine, in order of historical importance, of the company.

Alessandro has been fundamental in managing the presence of Mario Schiopetto wines, most importantly, sharing the quality and care behind Schiopetto wines with the world. All welcome and cin, cin!

Alessandro Rotolo at Zingari.

Alessandro Rotolo, from the beginning of his life, has been in the vineyards, in the winery and in the cellar. His first harvest was in 2006 at Volpe Pasini, one of the best of the last 20 years. Alessandro follows every step of production with special focus on the vineyards, always working toward freshness and structure of the final product. In 2014, Alessandro and his father acquired Schiopetto, one of the most significant wineries of Friuli. Alessandro has always admired Mario Schiopetto, the pioneer of the Italian white wine, and studied his winemaking philosophy with their oenologist Dr. Lorenzo Landi, who continues to make these wines as Mario Schiopetto had done. Alessandro thinks of his mission as “back to the future.” His goal is to make a better wine with each vintage without forgetting the history and the wine’s origins.

The goal of the business is to remain in harmony with nature demonstrated in the dedication to total sustainability. Starting from planting and maintaining forests positively balancing the inevitable production of CO2, to the careful use of products with low environmental impact and finishing with highly technical boilers which autonomously provide the necessary central heating by using wood and clippings from the vineyard. Alessandro Rotolo leads the commercial management, communications, and development at the Schiopetto winery, a historic winery acquired by their family. Alessandro aims to create a system in the wine industry to preserve Pinot Blanc. For an entrepreneur, every drop of wine requires effort and difficult choices. And in the life of Alessandro Rotolo, wine has been a faithful companion since childhood. Most of his memories are tied to the family business, Volpe Pasini, acquired by his father in 1995, one of the ambassadors of Friulian winemaking worldwide. “Schiopetto is a company whose history is closely linked to its founder, winemaker Mario Schiopetto, who has changed the dynamics of the industry since 1970.

Mario Schiopetto at Zingari.

The winery of Mr. Mario Schiopetto has been owned, since 2014, by the Rotolo family who intend to maintain intact the mission and philosophy of Mario Schiopetto. Mario Schiopetto is the visionary who is not only responsible for the creation of the Schiopetto winery but also for bringing many modern white winemaking techniques to Fruili. One of the things Mario Schiopetto always said is that “a wine is not a great wine if it is not able to age well”. Mario was a pioneer who collaborated with experts in Germany and France to improve his winemaking techniques through machinery for vinification, experimental wine cellars, poles for the vineyard, and technology for the vinification process. He used these learnings and technology to produce elegant wines that became known as the “Schiopetto Style”. Mario’s lifelong collaboration with the world led him to plant a legacy of quality and a community enthusiastic for knowledge and improvement.

Convinced of the uniqueness of his wines, Mario decided that they should be put in a bottle unlike no other; thus the Renana Schiopetto was born. Mario became part of a group of producers who travelled across Europe and the USA seeking to explore methods for improving and modernizing winemaking. Later in life, he became a teacher and advisor for young winemakers, sharing his learnings and innovations. Mario, born in 1930, grew up in the Firemen’s Hostelry which belonged to his parents. He would select wines for the Hostelry with his father and eventually on his own. He was first a fireman and then a lorry driver which resulted in his travels across Europe. He began to make his own wine in 1963 and produced his first Tocai in 1965. He transformed the old, unkempt vineyards around the Archbishop’s Palace at Capriva which he rented from the church. In 1989, after fully renovating the vineyards, he was able to purchase the land.

Alessandro has been fundamental in managing the presence of Mario Schiopetto wines, most importantly, sharing the quality and care behind Schiopetto wines with the world.

“The mistake is in the hurry.”

“Be here now, be somewhere else later.”

“Nothing is more practical than finding God, than falling in Love in a quite absolute, final way. What you are in love with, what seizes your imagination, will affect everything. It will decide what will get you out of bed in the morning, what you do with your evenings, how you spend your weekends, what you read, whom you know, what breaks your heart, and what amazes you with joy and gratitude. Fall in Love, stay in love, and it will decide everything.” Fr. Pedro Arrupe S.J.

Seña at Ula and Zingari.

To do something of quality, you have to be present. Terroir in a world of Oak, you have to make something of balanced quality. Something of terroir.

Seña does what it needs to do in the Radda and Priorat “s” of the world. Make wine that counts.

This is quality and rich. History below…

Emily Faulconer, Chief Winemaker at Viñedos Familia Chadwick, has since worked in Bordeaux, New Zealand and the Napa Valley before bringing her all-encompassing understanding of global fine wines and sustainability back to the Aconcagua Valley.

“I could not be happier to take on the mantle at Viñedos Familia Chadwick. Quite simply, no other winery in Chile is so committed to quality and excellence. What I most admire and adhere to is the extraordinary attention to detail and authenticity that goes on here in the vineyard and winery. I will strive to ensure this next chapter continues to be exciting and revealing.” Emily Faulconer.

Emily Faulconer, technical director of Familia Chadwick, shares how this family winery has worked for decades to position Chilean wines among the best in the world

Were you already familiar with Familia Chadwick wines?

Eduardo Chadwick is a Chilean winemaker and the key figure behind the iconic Seña wine. He co-founded the Seña winery in 1995 with Robert Mondavi as a joint venture to create a world-class Chilean wine, which is now solely owned by his family, the Chadwick family, who also own Viña Errázuriz. Chadwick is known for his efforts to elevate the perception of Chilean wine globally, and Seña is a major part of that legacy.

From Chile with love. All Welcome.

Francesco Cucurullo at Zingari.

Francesco Cucurullo and his sister, Carolina, come from a long line of proud Sicilian farmers and have recently fallen back in love with the vine. Located in the high, rolling hills of Caltanisetta, north of Agrigento, they run an independent, organic farm that produces wheat, olive oil, apricots, peaches, and of course a fantastic array of small-batch, monovarietal wines.

Masseria del Feudo is not just a company; it is a family history. Values and ideals continue to be upheld by Francesco and Carolina, the fourth generation committed to promoting viticulture and agriculture in a land where innovation is supported by tradition. Their business philosophy translates into social responsibility towards the environment and a commitment to maintaining high production quality.

A century ago, Francesco Cucurullo’s great-grandfather bought his first parcel of land from the local Marchese and began a pastoral, Sicilian career harvesting corn and wheat. 20-30 years later, his grandfather added dairy cows to the equation and, eventually, Francesco’s own dad, Salvatore, began planting fruit orchards and then vines. Today, Francesco and his sister, Carolina, have 100+ hectares of farmland: still devoted to a combination of grain, hay, apricots, plums, peaches, olive groves and vineyards. All their vines are certified organic, are planted on a gradual slope, and include Frappato and Nerello Mascalese. That said, wine remains just one part of Masseria del Feudo’s vascular whole: “When people come,” says Francesco, “we love to have them visit the whole farm, not just the winery... we love to have them taste our plums and peaches, and to understand that wine, too, is a product of agriculture, not industry.”
