'Eiming was the first person to put art, drinking, and music together in a public business in San Francisco." -- Michelle Delaney / 111 Minna Gallery

Founded by Eiming Jung, 111 Minna Gallery opened its doors at 111 Minna Street in the SoMa aka Yerba Buena District of San Francisco in 1993. This location would later become the heart of an up and coming art district, which was later solidified wit

h the construction of the SF MOMA, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, and progressive galleries in the surrounding area. With a business model focused on service and hospitality, patrons began to relish the visual aesthetics sourced from Bay Area artists, in conjunction with the laid-back atmosphere that has long been associated with 111 Minna. While acting as host for a vast variety of art, specifically focused on underground, low brow, edgy and often controversial, 111 Minna quickly became, for many artists, the San Francisco gallery to exhibit their work, gaining a reputation for launching artists’ careers, both nationally and internationally. Since 1993, 111 Minna Gallery has maintained its reputation for constant progression and positive energy, and in so doing, has become a cornerstone of San Francisco culture. We're proud to be San Francisco's melting pot of creativity, art, music, and good times.

TONIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
September 5th 2026
6-9pm

Dialogues: David Ball & Ilya Shkipin
At Ryan Graff Contemporary
Ryan Graff Contemporary
804 Sutter st., SF
Closing Reception Saturday, September 5, 6-9 PM

Join Ryan Graff abd friends for the closing reception of David M. Ball and Ilya Shkipin’s Dialogues for an
evening of exhibition-inspired music from Ilya Shkipin and friends.

David M. Ball David Ball and Ilya Shkipin Ilya Shkipin begin with images already in motion: photographs, digital collage, generative tools, and the inherited languages of art history; then return them to the tactile and uncertain world of paint.

Ball builds through collision and accumulation, bringing disparate figures, histories, and visual traditions into crowded, ceremonial compositions. Shkipin moves in another direction, slowing images down until faces soften, spaces shift, and recognizable forms begin to slip toward memory.

Together, Ball and Shkipin approach painting as an act of transformation. One multiplies the image; the other erodes it. Both ask what survives as an image passes through technology, history, memory, and finally the human hand.

COMING UP AT HERON ARTS!!!!
Heron Arts

Heron Arts is excited to announce our next solo exhibition featuring the transcendental works of David Choong Lee, David Choong Lee. “Trace” will feature ~20 paintings plus two large assemblage-style installation pieces.

Opening reception: Saturday, September 12, 6-9pm - RSVP via link in bio.

“Originally from Seoul, Korea, David Choong Lee has been a staple of San Francisco’s art scene for the past over 30 years. He moved to San Francisco in pursuit of becoming a traditional fine artist. After years of focusing on the figure, he began to explore different concepts such as mixed media, sculpture and graphic design, and got influenced by such diverse sources as Van Gogh, Rembrandt, and underground music DJ scenes, and ended up creating his own artistic style that was combination of graffiti, collage, portrait, and classical realistic skill with bold graphic elements.

Also known for his elaborate assemblages composed of individual paintings on boxes on different depths, David deftly blends figuration with abstract dreamscapes, inserting realistically-rendered figures into explosions of shapes and kaleidoscopic colors.”
– David Choong Lee

Teacher and student, Ball and Shkipin have both embraced technology as a tool for ideation and the evolution of their creative practice while both still retaining their distinct aesthetic sensibilities.

"The paintings of David M. Ball and Ilya Shkipin both begin with images that have already passed through other systems: photographs, digital collage, generative tools, and the accumulated memory of art history. Ball uses these sources to build crowded, ceremonial worlds in which bodies, costumes, and visual traditions are recombined into something unfamiliar. Shkipin moves in the opposite direction, slowing and eroding the image until figures and interiors begin to waver, becoming less like pictures than memories struggling to hold their form.

Despite their different approaches, both artists are concerned with what survives translation. Ball multiplies the image; Shkipin dissolves it. Each returns the digitally mediated source to the physical world of oil paint, where touch, hesitation, revision, and matter reassert themselves. Their paintings occupy the unstable threshold between recognition and estrangement, asking what remains of the human figure after it has passed through technology, history, memory, and the hand. What remains is presence: fractured, mysterious, and still capable of connection."
