This was our dad’s vest when he bartended at the Hilton San Francisco Union Square in the late ’70s.

“It’s been almost 50 years since I wore this vest… I started in 1976 as a part-time banquet bartender. In early 1978 I was promoted to the lobby bar.”

At first, just a few pins…union, Hilton, name tag.

“I remember distinctly when I got my first customer pin… a gentleman named Karl from England gave me one… from there things just snowballed.”

“I was getting pins from countries all over the world from tourists, airline flight crews, corporate companies… At any given time there were around 100 pins on the vest. In all, I must’ve had around 250 pins.”

Each pin a story. Each shift a connection.

“The unfortunate thing… I had to remove all the pins to clean the vest… then put them all back on again.”

Almost 50 years later, we keep the vest here as a reminder: The apples don’t fall far from the tree.

We just uncovered something incredible.

City directories show our bar operating at 824 Ulloa Street as early as 1948 — first as Philosopher Tavern, later as Philosopher’s Inn, and eventually as Philosopher’s Club, the name we proudly carry today.

That means this little West Portal tavern has been pouring drinks in the same location for nearly 80 years.

Founded by Gino D. Bianucci and Paul Martini. Passed through generations — from Angelo George to the Donahues and Sullivans — carried forward by owners who loved this place.

In 2023, twin brothers Josh and Justin Fritsch became the next stewards.

We don’t take that lightly.
