August 14, 1944. A group of U.S. Navy officers crowds together for a photo right here at the original Dawn Club on Annie Street.

San Francisco was the gateway to the Pacific war. More than a million and a half servicemen shipped out through the Golden Gate, and many spent their last nights stateside in rooms like this one: low ceilings, dark wood, a long bar, and hot jazz. Even our own house bandleader, Lu Watters, was in Navy blues by then. Every Friday and Saturday, "Air Shots From The Dawn Club" carried the music out over the radio to servicemen across the Pacific.

Exactly one year later, to the day, news of Japan's surrender would set off celebrations across San Francisco.

We don't know who these men are. These photos came to us from vintage collector Gregory May in San Diego, who had them donated to him. Thank you, Gregory, for bringing them home to Annie Street. 🎺

Negroni Week is coming to Dawn Club 🍊

Negroni Week is an annual celebration (running September 21-27) where bars around the world put their own spin on the classic Negroni, with a portion of proceeds going to charity. This year, Dawn Club is putting two original riffs on the menu — and they couldn't be more different.

Thelonious Funk by Cameron Keys flips tropical on its head — a blend of Samaroli Demerara 1995 and McCoy rums with Campari and Capertif, topped with an orange citrus foam for a soft finish on a spirit-forward pour.

Tea for Two by Amanda Ancheta is a scotch-forward twist that brings together Orchard House Scotch, crisp apple, and Earl Grey tea, rounded out with dry vermouth and Luxardo Bitter Bianco. Elegant, aromatic, and a little unexpected.

Two bartenders, two totally different takes on a classic. Come find your favorite when Negroni Week kicks off Monday, September 21 at Dawn Club.

R&B legend Dr. Durrell “Tank” Babbs Sr. surprised us with a pop-up set at 1pm today. 🎷🔥 Guests only found out late last night. No ticket, a short time to prepare. Just a packed house, swaying. This is what a surprise looks like.
