We’re accepting artwork for our annual Día de las Madres / Mother’s Day Pop-Up Exhibition & Celebration at the Athenaeum Art Center!

Every year around Mother’s Day, we open our doors for a festive, bilingual celebration honoring mothers and maternal figures across cultures. Think paintings, sculptures, prints, mixed media, and yes — even fridge art. All skill levels welcome. 🎨

The night culminates in an opening reception with live mariachi music, printmaking demos, and a chance to meet fellow artists and neighbors. Rooted in Barrio Logan. Free and open to all.

Exhibition opening this Saturday at the Athenaeum Art Center! Join us for Annie Alarcón: 𝘍𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘋𝘦𝘷𝘰𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, featuring ceramic sculptures that move between vessel, body, and offering. Rooted in personal writing, sketches, and ritual, the works trace memory, grief, and care, using porcelain vessels as metaphors for presence, fragility, and the act of care itself.

Experience Alarcón’s new work as part of a vibrant evening—March 14 brings the full Barrio Art Crawl with open studios, galleries, street vendors, music, and all things art and culture.

Big news at the Athenaeum Art Center! 📣 🎊

We’re thrilled to welcome two new members to our team: Luisa Martínez, our new Assistant Director, Athenaeum Art Center, and Alyssa Dolleschal, our new Print Studio Assistant.

Luisa (she/they) is a transborder cultural worker, artist, and educator whose work challenges borders as emotional, political, and historical forces. Using storytelling, radical imagination, and collective making, they explore belonging, resistance, and solidarity. Her experience in building community-rooted art spaces and mentoring artists makes her an incredible addition to our leadership team.

Alyssa (they/them) is a printmaker and sculptural papermaker whose practice explores Chicano identity, heritage, and community through objects, symbols, and food. They examine how the market and everyday materials connect people, celebrate culture, and reflect labor. They bring expertise in lithography, intaglio, and multi-plate color etching, along with a passion for creative learning, to our print studio.

Meanwhile, our gallery is getting a refresh! Thanks to a generous grant from The Prebys Foundation, we’re improving layouts and making space updates to enhance the visitor experience. The AAC will be closed through December 5 while renovations continue.

We can’t wait to welcome everyone back for our reopening and the Athenaeum Faculty & Staff Exhibition, on view December 6, 2025–January 3, 2026, with a free opening reception on Saturday, December 13, 5–8 PM, during the Barrio Art Crawl 💫

Thanks to this generous $80,000 grant from The Prebys Foundation, we’ll strengthen access to arts and culture in Logan Heights through vital infrastructure upgrades and expanded community programming at the Athenaeum Art Center.

This recognition, alongside 66 other essential arts organizations, reflects our shared commitment in working toward a vibrant, inclusive future for the arts in our region. Congratulations to all!

Summer Printmaking with Kelvin Lopez!✨🎨

Ready to get hands-on in the print studio? Artist Kelvin Lopez is teaching two exciting printmaking classes at the Athenaeum Art Center—perfect for beginners and advanced students alike!

🖼️ Class 73: Grabado en Relieve: Relief Printmaking
▪️Wednesdays, 2–5 PM
▪️June 4–July 16 (No class July 2)

Participants will learn to produce fine art–quality relief print editions. From carving to different inking methods, this class is perfect for beginners or advanced students.

🖼️ Class 74: Serigraphy (Screen Printing)
▪️Thursdays, 10 AM–1 PM
▪️June 5–July 17 (No class July 3)

This screen-printing course offers in-depth knowledge on how to properly print fine- art editions. Students will learn how to print using stencils, drawing fluid and screen filler, and photo emulsion screen-printing processes. It will be helpful to have basic Photoshop or digital imaging experience but not required. Open to all levels of experience.
