Staying at The Cosmopolitan Hotel, you may have noticed a very peculiar feature on the floor.

Back in 1869, when the Seeleys built the hotel, the second story just sat on top of Casa de Bandini. During the restoration in the early 2000s, the upper level was finally attached to make the building safer in the event of an earthquake. These circles actually mark the locations where they drilled holes into the floor, put rebar down into the adobe, filled it with resin or epoxy and then sealed it back up.

We share a lot about The Cosmopolitan in the 1800s — its original heyday, so to speak — but what about the 1900s? What became of the building then? Well, it just so happens that it was used as a schoolhouse for a number of years—somewhere between being an olive oil cannery and boarding house.

One thing’s for certain: The Cosmopolitan Hotel has lived many lives and continues to flourish.

As railroads overtook the nation, Seeleys’ stagecoach business became obsolete and he eventually sold the Cosmopolitan Hotel in 1888. Changing hands and purposes throughout the 20th century, for a while the fate of the building was uncertain. Today, however, we know the ending to be a happy one, with the Cosmo recently fully refurbished and open to the public once again.
