It was a busy day for the Indian Detours at Santa Clara Pueblo! You can see the artists under the trees waiting to sell their artwork.

It is fascinating how you can conceive of a design and execute it on this scale. Before the weavers could begin the sheep's wool had to be shorn and cleaned, the plants harvested that were used to make the dyes, the wool died and spun, the loom prepared. We have many rugs in our collection and I never tire of looking at them. Fortunately the tradition continues today.

if you're visiting Arizona, take a tour of Canyon de Chelly. The tour includes a stop at a hogan to enjoy a short talk and demonstration by a weaver. It's an easy day trip from La Posada Hotel!
