Hey Sailors!
Updates on The Maiden’s Grasp

On Thursday of this week, we received the great news that the health department approved us to begin selling food right away! Unfortunately, The Gateway has notified us that they will evict us if we try and sell food at all in our space.

For the last year, we have been working to finish building our bar out and install a kitchen at our spot here at The Gateway. We’ve been working with The Gateway manager Bryan Hill who works for Vestar, the company that owns The Gateway to do this. Vestar has been aware of everything every step of the way to the point we’ve hired architects and contractors, and our architecture plans have been done for months. We have already spent upwards of $100,000 with more to spend. We have chefs, employees, and an entire business now on standby simply because a landlord is unjustly sabotaging and attempting to suffocate their own tenant.

This is all personal and predatory against us as Vestar is engaging in anti-business practices. The Gateway is trying to put our business out of business and block us from increasing our revenue because they hate us and are trying to force us out of our lease. It's important to note that Vestar donated to Erin Mendenhall’s campaign in 2019. They also have a contract with Hines, the company who destroyed the Utah Pantages Theater and filed a fake stalking injunction against our owner, Michael Valentine for his community work uncovering their illegal corruption.

We were hoping to sell food to you starting yesterday, but now attorneys have to get involved over a simple menu change. Vestar is costing our business a minimum of $500/day in lost revenue. It is our full intention to continue to work very hard to make our unique spot successful for our customers and for Utah by serving the products 80% of our customers want to buy, food, alcohol, and hard cider. It is our full intention to carry out the rest of the 13.5 years we have on our lease at The Gateway.

It’s a shame Vestar is the worst landlord in the world and is now taking money from our business. We will defend our company to the bitter end 🍎

Art Nouveau was an international art style popular from the 1880's to the mid 1910's. Heavily inspired by nature, it often features shapes and colors from plants and flowers, with vibrant greens and earth tones. Very intricate and detailed work was seen in painting, glass, iron, and architecture incorporating asymmetry throughout the designs.

Art Nouveau was a reaction to Historicism and Revival art, especially seen in architecture with the building of Greek and Roman structures throughout the 1880's and 1890's such as the 1893 Columbian Exposition (Chicago World's Fair).

Art Nouveau preceded Art Deco, the Harlem Renaissance, and the cultural and artistic flourishing of the 1920's.
