Hi, Salem Common and Derby Street area residents:
I have received multiple reports of brown water in the Salem Common and Derby Street areas today. My understanding of the issue is that there was planned work being done with a private contractor who notified some abutters, but unfortunately the scope of the people affected by the work today was larger than the group that was provided notice. I am talking with DPS and the mayor's office to try to find out how we can prevent this in the future.
In the meantime, residents may see brown or yellowed water due to metal contamination (mostly iron) in the sediments - this is not a substance that is typically considered harmful, but I understand that it can be quite disturbing to see. Please flush your toilets and run the cold water from your faucets until the water runs clear. The city has also opened fire hydrants in the area to try to bleed the lines more quickly, so you may see some water in the streets.
DPS did announce this planned work to Council via email earlier in the week, and I appreciate their transparency. I subsequently shared the information in my email updates yesterday. It was not an emergency or a system failure, just a communication issue. Unfortunately, it just seems that more people than notified were affected, and I am sorry for any distress or inconvenience this may have caused our residents.

Hoy he recibido múltiples reportes sobre la presencia de agua de color marrón en las áreas de Salem Common y Derby Street. Según tengo entendido, el problema se originó debido a unos trabajos programados que estaba realizando un contratista privado; si bien este notificó a algunos vecinos colindantes, lamentablemente el alcance de las personas afectadas por las obras de hoy resultó ser mayor que el del grupo que recibió dicha notificación. Estoy conversando con el Departamento de Obras Públicas (DPS) y con la oficina del alcalde para tratar de determinar cómo podemos evitar que esto vuelva a ocurrir en el futuro.
Mientras tanto, es posible que los residentes observen que el agua sale de color marrón o amarillento debido a la contaminación por metales (principalmente hierro) presente en los sedimentos. Si bien esta sustancia no suele considerarse nociva, comprendo que su aspecto pueda resultar bastante inquietante. Por favor, descarguen sus inodoros y dejen correr el agua fría de sus grifos hasta que esta salga completamente transparente. La ciudad también ha abierto las bocas de incendio de la zona para intentar purgar las tuberías con mayor rapidez, por lo que es posible que vean algo de agua corriendo por las calles.
El DPS anunció estos trabajos programados al Concejo Municipal por correo electrónico a principios de esta semana, y agradezco su transparencia al respecto. Posteriormente, yo mismo compartí dicha información a través de mis boletines informativos por correo electrónico en el día de ayer. No se trató de una emergencia ni de un fallo del sistema, sino simplemente de un problema de comunicación. Lamentablemente, parece que el número de personas afectadas superó al de las personas notificadas; por ello, pido disculpas por cualquier inquietud o inconveniente que esta situación haya podido causar a nuestros residentes.
