Minnesota's first brewery, the legendary Yoerg Brewing Company has become the go-to destination European-style brewpub in the Twin Cities and entire Midwest. At 19 years of age, Yoerg moved to the United States, first settling in Pittsburgh, moved to Galena Illinois soon after and finally settled in St. Anthony first opened a butcher shop in St. Paul, but soon saw a great need for a brewery in thi

s growing town and founded Yoerg Brewing Company where Eagle and Washington streets used to meet below the present parking lot of the Excel Center, ten years before Minnesota became a state. From the beginning, quality was always the first order of the day. Yoerg Brewing Company was the first brewery to open in Minnesota, and the family built a sterling reputation for their magnificent beers right from the start. However, Yoerg wanted to grow and improve, and in 1871, he moved two blocks south to the then predominantly German West Side on Ohio Street and built an extensive stone brewery. His new venture consisted of three buildings and carved out nearly a mile of underground cooling caves along the Mississippi River to produce and age pure lagers just like his ancestors in Bavaria had done. This new brewery would become one of the most modern in the country, with steam-power and a then state of the art assembly line that soon was churning out over 20,000 barrels a year of beer. By 1891, Yoerg Brewing Company was producing 35,000 barrels a year and was the largest brewery in Minnesota. The beer was distributed throughout Minnesota in both kegs and bottles, with the kegs being made at the facility in the company’s own cooper shop. This was a true family operation, with Anthony’s wife Elovina managing the business, and their seven children all taking active parts in the brewery. The eldest son Anthony Jr was born in 1854, graduated in 1874 from the University of Minnesota and became the brewery’s General Manager soon after. Anthony Jr was an ambitious man, and was very active in local politics, being elected to the St. Paul City Council in 1890, the school board in 1896 and the State Legislature in 1903. Brothers William, Frank, Henry and Louis Yoerg were all involved in the now wide array of family businesses, overseeing the vast real estate holdings as well as managing the bookkeeping department. After Anthony Sr. died in 1891, the boys were well prepared to take over the operation and brought the brewery into it’s greatest era of producing Minnesota’s finest beers. The Yoerg family survived Prohibition by successfully producing soft drinks and milk, when repeal came about in 1933, they were back in full beer production. Unfortunately, times changed in the brewing industry across the nation, and by the time the Brewery finally closed its doors in 1952, Anthony Jr’s son Alfred was the third generation Yoerg to run the brewery. Today, 60 years after their demise, Yoerg Brewing paraphenalia is still some of the most treasured collectables in the country, and the name as revered as it was 150 years ago. those who remember, the Yoerg beers were always considered the finest ever produced in Minnesota, and are still today, held with the utmost reverence in the state’s brewing industry.

Our head brewer Brennan was in yesterday brewing a new batch – stay tuned for style details and estimated tap arrival. As a result we have a bag of spent grain available by our backdoor at 378 Maria. I know we've had folks pick this up for gardens or farm use. First come, first take away! Come on by. We'll do an update post when it's gone...

A FIRST FOR YOERG: CIDER ON TAP
The Yoerg Brewing Company has never had a cider on draft. That changes now.

Galipette Brut is a French farmhouse cider — dry, crisp, and naturally fermented from Normandy apples. No added sugar, no artificial anything. Just apples and time.

If you think you don't like cider, you should try this one. If you already love cider, you've been waiting for this. Many of you had this in the bottle here at the pub – fresh on the tap is cider at the next level. We look forward to pouring you one, or two...

10% Discount – SUPPORT OUR E7 STREET BUSINESS FRIENDS

As many of you have discovered, E7th street, the main business corridor just a block north of Yoerg is under long-term construction between Mounds Blvd and Arcade Street. The businesses run by our friends on E7th are taking a hit due to the traffic detour and we'd like to help keep them thriving.

So, until construction is complete, patronize any E7th business and bring your receipt (digital or physical) into Yoerg Brewing Company for 10% off your final bill.

Click on the link in this post to get all the details on the businesses in this area or come in to Yoerg for a flyer. There's a bit of everything over here – so make it an outing. For example you can: get coffee at Cafeto Shop or Swede Hollow Café; chow down on pupusas (my favorite!) at Mañana and tacos at Taqueria Los Paisanos; treat yourself to ice cream at Michoacana Purepecha; pick up fresh veggies, meat and everything else you need for Taco Tuesday at CentroMex Super Mercado; or get coiffed at Patron Barber (I'm due for a cut myself).

Then come into Yoerg for some beer, wine, cider, mead and a discount!

Get all the info on these and many other awesome businesses on E7th and Arcade. We guarantee that even if this will be the first time you visit them, it won't be your last. Support E7th Businesses – they're our neighbors, colleagues and friends.

Construction will soon impact East 7th Street between I 94 and Minnehaha Avenue as part of a MnDOT roadway improvement project.

TWO MONTHS IN – Thank you, Dayton's Bluff! 🍺

Today marks two months since Barry and I took the keys to Yoerg Brewing Company, and we want to say something simple: THANK YOU!

Thank you for trusting us with this place. Thank you for showing up — for birthday parties, for Dyngus Day with Break the Bubble, for evenings with the East Side Area Business Association and the St. Paul Homebrew Club. You've made these first 60 days feel like home.

We're just getting started. Keep your eyes open for Tripel Play, our first Oktoberfest celebration, and a few surprises we're not ready to announce yet.

But first — today.

Our Belgian Summer Session flight is back for its final day: four 4oz pours of Belgian beer — from a tart lambic wheat to a bone-dry farmhouse ale — for $19.95.

We're open noon–6pm today, and when the flight board comes down, it's gone until next time.

Rain or shine, summer tastes better in Belgium. Come grab one before we close it out.☀️🌧️

Cheers,
Jason & Barry

May 29-31: Belgian Summer Session Flight
-------------------------------------------
This weekend, we're highlighting four Belgian beers, all under 6% ABV, that are perfect summer sippers. Up first is Kasteel Wit, a soft and citrusy Belgian Witbier. Second is Timmermans Blanche Lambicus, a Witbier with lambic blended in, that went on tap this week. Taste these two Witbiers side-by-side and experience the difference that spontaneous fermentation can have on the same beer style. Third, we're offering De Ranke Saison de Dottignies, a dry, hoppy Saison. It's peppery finish will prepare your tongue for the maltiness of the final beer on the flight, De Koninck Bolleke. A staple here at the Yoerg Brewing Company, Bolleke is a classic Antwerp session ale and the ideal way to end your journey through Belgium. Santé!

NEW ON TAP: Timmermans Blanche Lambicus
A wheat beer blended with lambic from one of Belgium's last traditional lambic breweries (est. 1702). Tart, refreshing, 4.5% — the perfect summer session beer.

Pair it with our Scaldis Pêche Mel for a lambic duo: two Belgian traditions, two very different experiences. Don't miss it!

LA GUILLOTINE NOW ON TAP: From the brewers of Delirium Tremens comes a Belgian Strong Golden Ale named for the French Revolution's most famous instrument. 8.5%, golden, deceptively smooth, served in a 25cl chalice

If you loved Duvel 666, meet its successor on Tap 5. Same strength, bigger personality.

New on Tap: Scaldis Pêche Mel
Brasserie Dubuisson — one of Belgium's very oldest breweries (est. 1769) — makes one of the world's great fruit beers (and always a customer favorite at Yoerg). It's a rich amber ale infused with peach, 8.5%, served in a crystal chalice.
This is the only keg available in our market. When it's gone, it's gone. We're open at noon. Summer starts now.

Happy Memorial Day! To allow our staff to observe the holiday and in honor for all who have died in the service of our country, Yoerg Brewing Co will be closed today, Monday May 25th. We hope to see you again starting on Tuesday.

We're clearing the cellar for summer! Mc Chouffe and Samuel Smith Nut Brown are on their last kegs. While they're normally $12.95 (33cl) and $9.95 (16oz), this weekend they're $7.95 (33cl) and $5.95 (16oz). In their place, we're putting Scaldis Pêche Mel, a Belgian peach beer, and Timmermans Blanche Lambicus, a Belgian lambic wheat beer, on tap. Enjoy Mc Chouffe and Samuel Smith Nut Brown one last time before summer gets underway. And if you're the lucky one to "kick the keg", you get to take the glass home.
