Last week we learned we are James Beard semi-finalists in the category of “Hospitality.” While we were ecstatic for the recognition, it was difficult to enjoy, celebrate or share the news due to the tragic events unfolding in our cities. Hospitality: according to Merriam Webster, “the generous and friendly treatment of visitors and guests.” Dictionary.com defines it as “the generous and friendly reception of visitors, guests or strangers.” The Bible has multiple references to hospitality: Romans 12:13, “Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.” Hebrews 13:3: “Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing so some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.” In Genesis 18, Hospitality is seen as a “Spiritual Act” with generous hospitality being a core aspect of reflecting God’s character. Fifteen years ago when Joan and I were envisioning what we wanted Joan’s in the Park to be, one of our non-negotiables was that Joan’s had to be small enough so that we could make a real connection with every guest. And for 14 plus years we have practiced this, cherished it and have felt privileged to have been given the opportunity to do so. But what we do in our little, unassuming restaurant in St. Paul pales in comparison to what we have all witnessed our community doing in the past several weeks. What we’ve seen from our brave and resilient community is genuine hospitality. Caring for and taking care of strangers without expecting anything in return.

Pictured here is our house made cavatelli with pancetta bolognese. Nothing fancy, just true comfort. The impact of ICE on our community has made it challenging to keep things going and to stay motivated. But that is what we are doing. After all, the word restaurant comes from the latin word “resaurare” meaning “to renew” or “restore”. We are here for you when you need a pause and to feel restored.
