When you are having your brat and your beer this weekend, stop and think about what Independence Day really means and what sacrifices were made because of this day. Many people think that this is the day that we gained our independence from Great Britain. Not true. This is the day we declared our independence from Great Britain. This is the day we began our fight for our freedom. This is the day when thousands of farmers were asked to march up and down the eastern side of this country with no shoes and no warm clothes to shoot men whom they considered to be their own countrymen. These farmers had only shot rabbits before. Food was scarce and many died of starvation, exposure, and Smallpox. Try to imagine what you would do if your governor knocked on your door while you’re stuffing your face with brats and beer and asked you to get your rifle and follow him. Would you do it? What if you were told that the government was going to take your land? Just take a minute to reflect on this and I guarantee that your brat will taste better.
