The Reality of Black Business Ownership on St. Helena Island

We have been operating Willie’s Breakfast Bar and Grill for nearly three years without a single loan or grant. Every plate served and every light bill paid has come from the pockets of people who often have less than the ones collecting the taxes. We have applied to every known agency SCORE the Black Chamber of Commerce the USDA and others. The response has been silence delays or indifference.

Meanwhile we are taxed at every level. Beaufort County wants its share. The federal government takes its portion. We are hit with hospitality taxes accommodation taxes and more. But what do we get in return. Where is the investment into the very businesses that generate this revenue. Where is the organizational infrastructure that makes sure the dollars collected from Black businesses actually find their way back into our communities.

There is none.

This is the cost of doing business in an area with no representation and no leadership that advocates for small Black-owned enterprises. And it is why we are building something new. A structure designed to support those who are doing the work but have been left behind.

Because if there is no vehicle for equitable development if there is no effort to support the people producing the revenue we will never see a visible thriving business district on St. Helena Island. And we are tired of waiting.

We need our own jurisdiction our own system our own organized economic vision.

That is what we are creating. We will not beg to be included in systems that were never built for us. We are building our own.

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who came out to Willie’s Breakfast Bar & Grill to celebrate the Heritage Festival with us! We had an absolute blast—honestly, it was the best time I’ve ever had celebrating our heritage.
