Kanawha County Announces Curbside Flood Debris Pickup in Affected Areas
Charleston, W.Va. – The Kanawha County Commission will provide curbside pickup of flood-related debris for residents in the areas of Campbells Creek, Rutledge Road, Cabin Creek, and Cross Lanes who were impacted by the recent flooding.
If you were impacted by the flooding and live in an area of Kanawha County not listed above, please call 304-357-0570.
Collection will begin on Monday, August 24, 2026, and continue through Friday, September 4, 2026.
Residents should have their eligible flood debris placed along the public right-of-way and ready for pickup as soon as Monday, August 24, 2026. The County will announce in the coming days exactly where the crews will begin collecting debris and will provide additional updates as the collection moves through the affected areas. Residents are encouraged to check Kanawha County’s social media pages regularly and download the Kanawha Alert app for updates on pickup locations and collection progress.
This special debris collection is only for materials damaged or generated by the flooding. Regular household trash, unrelated construction materials, and other items that were not damaged as a result of the flooding will not be collected as part of this program.
Residents must bring all eligible flood debris from their property to the public right-of-way adjacent to their property for collection.
County crews and contractors will not enter private property, homes, garages, yards, or other private areas to remove debris.
Debris should be placed near the roadway without blocking the roadway, sidewalks, drainage ditches, or access for emergency vehicles. Residents should also keep debris away from fire hydrants, utility poles, power lines, mailboxes, meters, trees, and other structures.
To assist with proper collection and disposal, residents should not place all debris into one mixed pile. Flood debris should be separated into distinct piles or groups by material type.
Residents should separate:
• Construction and demolition debris: drywall, insulation, lumber, flooring, carpet, cabinets, and similar flood-damaged building materials.
• Household goods and furnishings: flood-damaged furniture, mattresses, and other household items.
• Large appliances/white goods: refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, stoves, water heaters, and similar appliances.
• Vegetative debris: tree limbs, brush, and other vegetation resulting from the flooding.
• Household hazardous materials: paints, oils, chemicals, batteries, and similar materials must be kept separate from all other debris.
Do not mix these materials together. Separating debris will allow crews to more safely and efficiently collect, handle, and properly dispose of flood-related materials.
The County asks residents to remember that this is not a general community cleanup or bulk trash collection program.
Items placed for collection must be directly related to the flooding. The County will not collect:
• Regular household garbage or routine trash;
• Materials from remodeling or construction unrelated to the flood;
• Debris brought in from areas that were not affected by the flooding; or
• Other materials that were not damaged or generated by the flooding.
“Our priority is helping families and communities recover as quickly as possible from this flooding,” said Kanawha County Commission President Ben Salango. “By providing curbside debris pickup in the impacted areas, we hope to take one more burden off residents as they work to clean up their homes and property. We ask everyone to follow the collection guidelines so our crews can move through these communities safely and efficiently.”
“Flood recovery is difficult, and we want residents in the affected communities to know that Kanawha County is here to help,” said Commissioner Natalie Tennant. “This debris collection will give families a safe and convenient way to dispose of materials damaged by the flood. I encourage residents to separate their debris, place it along the public right-of-way, and take advantage of this service during the collection period.”
The Commission also reminds residents that the County’s regularly scheduled cleanup events will take place this September:
• September 12, 2026 – Old Herbert Hoover High School in Clendenin
• September 26, 2026 – South Charleston at the intersection of C Street and 4th Avenue
Residents who are unable to get rid of all of their flood-related debris out for curbside collection during the collection period may bring remaining eligible flood debris, except vegetative debris, along with other eligible non-flood-related items to either of the County Cleanup events.
As a reminder, the County Cleanup events are for Kanawha County residents only, including residents who live within municipalities, and are free of charge.
As always, in the spring of 2027, the County will also host its spring cleanup for the Upper Kanawha Valley in the Chelyan area, as well as one in the Sissonville area. Dates and locations for those events will be announced in the coming months.
