When we bought The Shack 17 years ago we realized that this was a special place. It began in 1931 by a man of vision with not much money to his name but good friends. Built from part of an old farmhouse that was hauled up the street on a flatbed truck. Doc’s Place was an instant success and became one of Sacramentos first drive ins. Since then it has gone through a few hands but has always remained a neighborhood spot. That was the main thing that drew us to this iconic place. During our time we have tried to do our part to keep this valuable and necessary community place alive. When we took over I told Jen that I wanted a place that brought good people and good food together at a place they could call their own backyard. The Shack is more than what is served out of the kitchen, it is a place to be with friends, make new friends, and relax in a place that you know you’re welcome. We have had a great time being a part of the East Sac family and to be a steward of this wonderful place.
Now that our good friends Rob and Peter of Urban Roots will be taking over I feel that we can leave knowing you will be in good hands. It will be different, but that’s OK. When we came in we had to find our own groove, and it wasn’t always well received. But I think you will find that the spirit of the place is what YOU make it. We are excited to see the evolution of what they will create and hope you will continue to support the place we will all call our East Sac backyard.
All the best, and thank you all for the friendship and love you’ve given us for these awesome 17 years. We love you
Gary and Jen
