In Loving Memory of Sergio Barrios-Roman 🕊️

Our hearts are heavy as we say goodbye to Sergio, the heart behind River City Bakery, Bean Heads, Fluid Espresso Bar, Barrio, and Venus Taproom.

Sergio was a pillar of our community, but above all, he was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. After a brave battle with cancer since 2019, he is now at peace.

I want to reach out to the community and let everyone know that our beautiful Sergio is in the hospital again. He has been here many times for different reasons over the last 6 years. His battle with cancer it seems is coming to an end. I wish that some miracle would come in now but it doesn’t seem like that is going to happen. He means so much to so many. He has done so many things for the community and has run businesses in Sacramento for a very long time with his family. Life will simply not be the same without him. We will miss him so very much. I personally will be left empty and devastated. Please know that we are doing our best to hold the business together but it is very difficult while this is happening.

A long time ago in shop downtown called fluid espresso bar now was the birth of the original California style empanada. It was said that no one would know what they are and that no one would buy them but YOU PROVED THEM WRONG! Thanks to you this is our top selling bakery item at both locations. You ever wake up some days with the need to speak to the universe? Well I don’t know if the universe is listening here on social media but maybe you are and sometimes I might say something that resonates with someone somewhere out there. I’m not trying to complain or seek pity but 2025 has been good and bad. I would just maybe for a little while like to feel what it’s like to not have to struggle. You know what I mean?
You have heard me talk about my husband Sergio and his health. Again I’m not trying to get some pity out of you but it’s been real hard lately to want to carry on. He is a light to so many of you and to me of course no matter how much we bicker. We’ve spent the last few months in and out of the hospital trying to figure out how to keep him here as long as we can. It is very difficult to run a business with a partner, both business and life, who is so very ill. It is even harder when the world keeps throwing punches at you. We’ve been at this business thing for many years and have worked really hard all to be met with more challenges every single year. From having to suddenly move, to changes in family (good and bad) to loss of loved ones for various reasons, to the thieves that won’t quit and so much more. These things are normal and somewhat out of our control but then there are those people and organizations in the world who are out there to stick it to you, try to make you pay and teach you a lesson. We are well aware that the universe and just having a business has lessons but when people decide that you need to be taught a lesson in an already difficult and chaotic life. That their career is based on this or that they somehow think they are smarter and perfect humans who have this authority to impose on you that’s when I need to say to these people- get the f%*! OUT!! Just get out! You don’t have any real knowledge or experience if you blatantly want to hurt or destroy people. So things didn’t go your way. Boohoo 😢 🎻 or to others, get a grip of what is happening right now to small businesses and what’s going on in the world currently. This world is greater than you or I. Continued in comments 👇
