As a Sonoma County native, winemaker Trevor Durling was introduced at an early age to the importance of place and terroir in wine. His winemaking philosophy today revolves around the idea that the vineyard has a story to tell and it’s his job to coax that out of the fruit and into the bottle.

The stories the Hewitt Vineyard holds have proved time and time again to be full of complexity, depth and flavor. At the start of his career with Hewitt, Trevor was an integral part of the team that produced the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon that became Wine Spectator’s #4 Wine of the Year.

Today, he works on the ground and in the cellar to tease out Hewitt’s story as one of the finest and most unique vineyards in Napa.

93 points - Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford Double Plus 2018 - “Dense and winey, with cassis, plum and black cherry reduction notes wrapped up with licorice snap and sassafras notes that cut broadly as this moves along. There's a brambly hint through the finish, giving this needed energy, while a touch of iron adds good contracts. For fans of the muscular style. Best from 2023 through 2037.” — JM

Our 2022 vintage begins before there is even a hint of growth on the vine with pruning. Often thought of as the foundation of viticulture, this process has a profound impact on wine quality and style. At Hewitt, skilled workers cut away the previous year’s canes to ensure each new cluster of grapes receives the proper nutrients, airflow, and sunlight.
Pruning practices vary greatly depending on the terroir, and the Hewitt Vineyard’s unique location in the Rutherford Bench section of the Rutherford AVA dictates when and how the vines are pruned.
Our vines have been carefully pruned and trained since their first planting by Bill Hewitt and Andre Tchelistcheff and our current winemaker Trevor Durling goes to great lengths to ensure the vines are pruned with the utmost care and skill.
