The Billion-Dollar Gamble: A Story of Greed and Nerve

Back in the mid-90s, Hong Kong’s neon streets had a name people knew well—Cheung Tze-keung, better known as “Big Spender.” He wasn’t your average criminal. He played everything like a high-stakes game, treating real life like a casino.

On May 23, 1996, he pulled off one of the boldest moves imaginable. He intercepted Victor Li, son of billionaire Li Ka-shing. But what came next was even crazier—Cheung didn’t hide or negotiate from a distance. He walked straight into Li Ka-shing’s mansion, strapped with explosives, and demanded a massive ransom. Calm as ever, Li agreed to pay $1.038 billion HKD (around $130 million USD).

For most people, that would’ve been the end. Not for Cheung.

After blowing huge amounts of money gambling in Macau, he did something almost unbelievable—he called Li Ka-shing. Not to threaten him
but to ask for advice. He wanted to know how to turn that stolen fortune into something legitimate. Li told him straight: if you want to keep your money, you have to leave that life behind.

Cheung didn’t listen.

Instead, he doubled down. About a year later, he kidnapped another major businessman, Walter Kwok, for another huge payout. But luck doesn’t last forever. In 1998, after fleeing to mainland China, Cheung was caught and executed by firing squad.

In the end, he managed to take fortunes from some of the richest men in the world—but couldn’t hold onto any of it. Because while you can steal money, you can’t steal the mindset it takes to keep it.

What started as a quiet insult behind closed doors quickly turned into a full-blown public collapse.

After a luxury fashion brand allegedly mocked Lisa Bonet’s natural grey hair, the backlash came fast—but what followed was even bigger.

Jason Momoa stepped in.

No PR team. No long statement. Just four words that hit like a hammer: “Your company is trash.”

From that moment, everything shifted.

Fans rallied behind Lisa, celebrating her authenticity while turning on the brand. Influencers cut ties, customers canceled orders, and protests even began appearing outside flagship stores.

Within 48 hours, the damage was undeniable—hundreds of millions wiped from the company’s value, with analysts calling it an “authenticity correction.”

The brand eventually apologized and cut ties with those responsible, but the fallout had already exposed something deeper.

This wasn’t just about one comment.

It became a moment about respect, aging, and authenticity in an industry often built on the opposite.

And in the end, one message stood louder than anything else:

Integrity never goes out of style.
