Belanger House Restaurant & Catering

Belanger House Restaurant & Catering French Restaurant Prior to 1948 Ernest Belanger worked as a shop superintendent at the National Twist Drill Co. The family lived above the gift shop. When Mr.

The job of grinding steel bothered his eyes so much he decided to change occupation. The Belangers opened a gift shop show room in the main floor level of the Belanger's house at 414 South Lafayette Royal Oak in 1948. Some of the items sold consisted of pottery and gifts inside, outside they sold rustic picnic tables, tables and chairs, and birdbaths made in Grand Blank. The Belanger's rented one

of the main floor rooms to a chef which inspired the idea to combine the gift shop with a restaurant. This location became their 1st Belanger House Restaurant-tea Room, bakery and gift shop. Son Ron Belanger delivered pies to Elias Brother Big Boy in their early days before they made their own. In 1956 the Belanger House moved to 1812 North Main, Royal Oak. Just two months after opening two cars crashed through the restaurant in the same week causing the building to need numerous repairs. Fortunately at this location the home for their family of nine was conveniently located next door to the business. In 1966 the Belanger family moved to a new home nearby on E. Hustonia Ave. Their old house next door to the restaurant was demolished to make room for a large parking lot, renovation and addition to the restaurant. The addition to the building would seat 150 in the Dinning room with a dance floor and live entertainment and seating for 200 in the downstairs Banquet room. The former dinning area of the restaurant was renovated into a Cocktail Lounge. The restaurant also had a Carry out Bakery, Pizzeria with delivery, and Catering services. The Belanger House was sold to Mr. Christian in the late 70's and became Mr. Christians, Ron Belanger kept Belanger House Catering setting up in Berkley. Christian died his partner changed the name to Jameson's. Mr Jameson latter sold the restaurant to National Connie Island currently at 1812 North Main. National ConnieIsland unfortunately had to demolished the Belanger House building do to building code changes making remodeling not an option. When Ron Belanger retired, Belanger House catering was sold to Mr Forte. Belanger Forte Catering, now Forte Belanger Catering, continues today in Troy.

The original Quiche Lorraine consisted of an open pie, made with a bottom crust and a filling of custard and smoked bacon and was cooked in a cast Iron skillet. Cheese was added to the recipe at a much later time. Quiche Lorraine is believed to have originated in the rural Lorraine Region of France.
