At dinner tonight in Santorini there was a young couple from India sitting in front of us at the restaurant.

Here are two conversations, ours and theirs, combined for your convenience…

Kiki: “That guy is putting out some interesting energy. “

Me: “I was thinking the same thing. And she looks…I don’t know…nervous?”

Suddenly, the guy stands, motions over the owner of the restaurant and hands her his phone.

He then pulls a little black box out of his coat pocket.

Me: “Oh, crap, he’s going to propose!”

That Guy turns to the young woman and she stands up.

That Guy: (Nervously) “You will marry me?”

Her: “Are you telling me I will marry you?”

I pulled out my phone and started taking pictures.

Me: (to Kiki) “I’m totally posting this.”

That Guy: “I mean, Will you marry me?”

Her: “Yes. I will marry you!”

Kiki: “Oh, good. She said yes.”

The restaurant customers broke into applause.

Side note: Later, as we were leaving the restaurant, we walked over and congratulated them.

They are a lovely couple.

Turns out the restaurant owner didn’t hit the record button.

I mentioned that I had pictures and she was thrilled because I took the only pictures of the proposal.

I airdropped them to her and now I feel like I did my good deed for the year.

And, yes, she said I can post this story :)

Friends,

It was five years ago this week that I very nearly died from congestive heart failure.

For those of you who know about these things, my ejection fraction (the heart’s ability to pump out blood) was 10-percent. Most people die when their EF is below 20-percent.

For those who don’t die, predicted survival is about 5 years.

So, I’m officially in overtime!

Anyway, I’ve made some major lifestyle changes:

-closed the restaurant
-moved to Costa Rica
-lost 50 lbs
-6 gym days a week

My EF is now in the normal range and my cardiologist expects me to live a long and healthy life if I keep working on myself.

I had a call from him tonight and I reminded him that it had been five years. He reminded me (for the hundredth time) that I’m really lucky to be alive.

Anyway, I’m very thankful for God for looking out for me, for my wife and family for loving me, and for all of you for your encouragement.

Much more to come…

So, this is me with the “Barbie Girl” filter.

I'm really enjoying this time of year in Costa Rica.

This is the off-season because the months of December through April are when Americans and Canadians flock here to escape the cold.

The result?

It's affordable for Costa Ricans to take their beach vacations.

Our little town, Playas del Coco, is one of the most popular beach communities in the country...and I've heard it's the number one vacation spot for people who live in San Jose.

So my sunset stroll along the beach tonight was a wonderful snapshot of Tico families celebrating their Pacific coast.

Special note to my Texas friends: The average high here in July is in the mid 80's.

Don't hate me.

Allow me to explain...

In 2003, NBC News threw a big party at 30 Rock for all of the people who covered the first months of the Iraq war.

There was some drinking.

Okay, there was a lot of drinking.

Anyway, toward the end of the night, we all started exchanging name tags. To be honest, I don't remember the finer details but I do remember spending some time hanging out with Tom Brokaw...which was pretty cool.

Tom was still anchoring NBC Nightly news during my first 3 years as a correspondent, so we spoke live on air many times...although we only met in person three or four times.

As an aside, Tom called me Martin Savidge on live television twice. As in, "Martin Savidge, reporting live from Atlanta, thank you."

So, back to the party at 30 Rock...
..I woke up the next morning only to discover that I was wearing Tom Brokaw's name tag on my suit. I sincerely hope that he woke up that morning and when he saw my name tag on his suit he said, "how the hell did I end up with Martin Savidge's name tag?"

Anyway, we were cleaning out our storage unit today and I found the name tag.

I will keep it forever.

Went on an ATV tour of a jungle in Costa Rica today.

Saw howler and white-faced monkeys.

Didn’t see any sloths (sadly) or crocodiles (thankfully).

Hi Y'all,

After almost six years of serving you in Round Top, Teague's Tavern has closed its doors for good. We've had an amazing journey, and we've served more than 180,000 customers over the years, but the lease on our building is up and we are moving on.

Specifically, Kiki and I are moving to Costa Rica, where we plan to get healthy, destress, and concentrate on writing and other creative projects.

Special thanks to the employees who have helped us over the years...some who've been with us since the beginning.

Also, thank you to all of our customers for making Teague's Tavern a go-to spot in Round Top.

We love you all, and we'll miss you.
