Today we remember the Marines, Soldiers, and Sailors who fought in the Battle of Belleau Wood, June 1–26, 1918.

In the forests of France, American forces halted the German advance and forged a legacy of courage, sacrifice, and determination that still echoes more than a century later. Belleau Wood became one of the defining battles in Marine Corps history, earning the Marines the nickname "Devil Dogs" and cementing their reputation for tenacity under fire.

As we raise a glass today, we remember those who never came home and honor the generations who answered the call when freedom demanded it.

As we continue our journey toward America's Semiquincentennial, we're looking back at some of the people, places, and stories that helped shape our nation.

In 1787, George Washington hosted a farewell gathering for officers and friends at Philadelphia's City Tavern. The celebration became famous not only for its significance, but for the tab that followed.

Historical records show the party consumed:

• 54 bottles of Madeira
• 60 bottles of Claret
• 22 bottles of Porter
• Cider
• Beer
• Whiskey
• Multiple punch bowls

The total bill came to £89.13s.6d—worth well over $17,000 today.

Whether the stories have grown with time or not, one thing is certain: America's founding generation understood the value of good company, spirited conversation, and raising a glass to a job well done.
