NC is rolling out a digital ID in December 2026. Initially it will be available on an app called NC wallet. For now patrons are being told to carry their physical ID with them for ABC Stores, bars, restaurants and the like. The Apple and Google wallets will have access to NC wallet later in 2027.
For now we will require your physical ID.
This is not a picture of your ID.
As we move forward and navigate the rules and laws for the digital ID one thing made clear is that we do not touch your phone. At no time should we take your phone in our hand. There's too much liability involved if a mistake is made and perhaps the phone drops.
Most likely we will end up with a device that you can tap that will pull up the information we require. There will be classes provided by ncabc that we will be attending that will train us on the digital wallet and digital ID.
Please have your physical ID with you no matter where you go when this starts. Not all locations will be ready to accept the North Carolina digital ID right away. A broader acceptance is expected later in 2027/2028.
