THIS SATURDAY - Barbara Parker and Her Emotional Support Band
Mainstay favorite Barbara Parker returns for a very special evening of music, this time in the intimate, casual setting that seems perfectly suited to her music and personality.

Barbara is a gifted singer, songwriter and storyteller whose heartfelt originals and distinctive interpretations of familiar songs have made her a favorite with Mainstay audiences. Her music reaches back to the great tradition of the American coffeehouse, with touches of folk, country, blues and Americana and echoes of artists including Joni Mitchell, Bonnie Raitt, Carly Simon, James Taylor and Patsy Cline.

For this performance, Barbara will be joined by her appropriately named Emotional Support Band, featuring Pres Harding on guitar, Steve Tremills on percussion and Brian Moore on bass, all familiar faces to Mainstay audiences. Rather than a traditional concert presentation, we’re turning The Mainstay into a relaxed, unplugged coffeehouse for the evening, bringing the performers and audience together for an up-close musical experience.

Expect a mix of Barbara’s original songs, some familiar classics, a few stories and the kind of easy musical chemistry that happens when good friends get together to make music. Barbara’s performances have always had a wonderfully personal quality, and this setting should bring that out even more.

David Buskin & Robin Batteau have been performing their “irresistible amalgam of melodic, sensual pop, folkie grit and killer wit” (The Washington Post) for more than forty years. Their songs have been recorded by many great artists, including Judy Collins, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, The Oak Ridge Boys, Peter, Paul & Mary, Johnny Mathis, Tom Rush, Bette Midler, Astrud Gilberto, Anne Murray, Dixie Carter and Roberta Flack. Their Clio Award-winning jingles have been recorded by “everybody famous with a mouth.”

But they are at their best live, dishing out what Stephen Holden of The New York Times called their “by turns acerbic, funny and plaintive” music and commentary.

“Their harmonies and wonderful presence onstage are as captivating as ever.”

— Ron Olesko, host of Traditions on WFDU-FM (New Jersey)

“They are something special. I think they levitated the audience. Terrific musicianship, memorable songs and just great all-around entertainers.”

— Rich Warren, WFMT (Chicago)

They are proud to have performed and produced benefits for and served on the boards of numerous nonprofit organizations including WhyHunger, Ocean Alliance, The Hole in the Wall Camp and Stand for the Troops.

They are delighted to be returning to The Mainstay — “one of our favorite places to play. Warm, responsive audiences who so far have not asked for their money back.”

This Week at The Mainstay - BARBARA PARKER

Barbara Parker Gets Up Close and Personal
Sometimes the best musical evenings are the ones that bring performers and audiences a little closer together. That is exactly what we have planned this Saturday when Mainstay favorite Barbara Parker returns with her Emotional Support Band for a special unplugged coffeehouse experience.
Barbara is a gifted singer-songwriter with a warm, engaging presence and a wonderful ability to make every audience feel right at home. Saturday’s relaxed format will give her the opportunity to share a mix of original songs, familiar favorites and perhaps a few stories about the music along the way.
Joining Barbara will be her "Emotional Support Band", featuring Pres Harding on guitar, Brian Moore on bass and Steve Trmills on percussion. Together, they will create the kind of intimate, good-humored and musically satisfying evening that feels especially at home in The Mainstay’s listening room.

It may be called an unplugged coffeehouse session, but we expect the evening to be fully charged with great music, warm friendship and plenty of personality.

OPEN MIC THIS WEDNESDAY AND A SPECIAL JAZZY PUB NITE THURSDAY! DON'T MISS OUT!
The Eastern Shore Jazz Ensemble brings together a talented group of musicians from Maryland and Delaware who share a passion for playing, celebrating and exploring jazz, one of America’s most distinctive musical art forms.
The ensemble’s repertoire spans an impressive range of styles, including classic jazz standards, music of the 1960s and ’70s, bebop and contemporary funk jazz. By combining familiar melodies with lesser-known selections and fresh arrangements, the group creates a lively and distinctive sound that brings new energy to music from across the decades.
The current lineup features Quinn Parsley on guitar, Dave James on trumpet, Ashley Watkins on flute, Julie Parsons on piano, Chris Levey on bass and Scott Hartman on drums. Together, they bring an unusually diverse collection of musical backgrounds, experiences and influences to the stage.
Guitarist Quinn Parsley is the owner of the Parsley School of Music and a gifted multi-instrumentalist who performs and teaches guitar, bass, keyboard, drums, mandolin, banjo, ukulele and other instruments. A graduate of Salisbury University with a degree in classical guitar, Quinn has worked as a session musician and live performer throughout Delmarva, Annapolis and the Washington, D.C. area. His experience also includes performing in pit orchestras at Salisbury University, Washington College and the Museum of the Bible.
Trumpeter Dave James earned his degree in music performance from St. Mary’s College of Maryland and spent much of his career performing throughout Baltimore, Annapolis and Washington, D.C. His appearances have included the Kennedy Center, the Old Post Office Pavilion and DC Space, and he has performed alongside such notable jazz musicians as Cat Anderson, Carl Grubbs, Jimmy Heath and Cab Calloway, as well as the Whit Williams Big Band.
Flutist Ashley Watkins is a professional musician based in Cambridge, Maryland. She has performed at venues throughout the region, including Salisbury University, The Avalon, Howard University and The Reach at the Kennedy Center. In addition to performing, Ashley maintains a private flute studio and continues to accept engagements throughout the area.
Pianist Julie Parsons brings an extraordinary international background to the ensemble, having performed in dozens of countries and in venues ranging from major concert halls to intimate living rooms. Her career has included live television appearances on Star Search, Spotlight and the European Song Contest in Tel Aviv. She has released several recordings and received honors from the Washington Area Music Association and the New York Pro Am Song Contest.
Drummer Scott Hartman has performed with community bands, Latin ensembles and church groups in both Hawaii and Maryland. He currently plays in a Jazz Band Masterclass combo directed by Jeff Antoniuk in Annapolis, where he continues to explore and develop his knowledge of the jazz tradition.
With Chris Levey anchoring the group on bass, the Eastern Shore Jazz Ensemble offers audiences an engaging musical journey filled with memorable melodies, creative arrangements and the spontaneous energy that makes live jazz so exciting. See less
