🌳 Our history: how the Shell came to be

The Kasschau Memorial Shell honors Frank and Howard Kasschau, a father and son who shaped music in Ridgewood for decades.

Frank led the Orpheus Club, a men’s chorus founded in 1909 and Ridgewood’s oldest musical organization. His son Howard took over in 1943, and Frank died the following year. In 1946, the Ridgewood Choral formed a committee to find a fitting memorial. The group considered an auditorium but decided to build an outdoor shell instead.

The money came from concerts. In 1947, Metropolitan Opera soprano Helen Jepson performed as a favor to her friend Frank Kasschau. In 1949, the first outdoor Pop Concert drew 2,500 people, and it became a June tradition. Every concert added to the fund.

The Shell was designed by Ridgewood resident and architect Wallace Dunlop. Its proscenium arch is 50 feet wide and 23 feet high, and its deep, curved apron makes it one of the largest stages in Northern New Jersey. It was dedicated on June 17, 1958, with a concert by the Ridgewood Choral and the Orpheus Club, and then given to the Village as a gift.

Since then, the Shell has hosted ballet, Gilbert and Sullivan, bluegrass and banjo bands, cultural music groups, and much more. A committee appointed by the mayor runs it today, with help from the Village’s Traffic & Signal Division, who prepare the electrical and sound systems every season.

Nearly 70 years later, the Kasschaus’ tradition lives on every summer night under the stars.
