Virginians For Change! 🎯

VFC is a volunteer-run, bi-partisan 501(4)c dedicated to education, empowerment, and advocacy against gun violence. We use our social media, digital outreach, and monthly meetings to educate about the reality of gun violence & related policy, empower members to confidently engage with GVP in their daily lives, and advocate directly with the Virginia General Assembly, federal representatives, and local leaders. Our over 3,000 members are parents, grandparents, and concerned community members who come from various political backgrounds, include gun owners and non-gun owners, and are located across the state of Virginia.

With a grassroots energy and a primary focus on Virginia-level legislation, VFC strives to be nimble and responsive to GVP efforts in the commonwealth. VFC partners with a large coalition of GVP organizations to make strides in bringing Virginia to the leaderboard of states with common-sense gun laws. We aim to amplify and uplift communities who bear the brunt of gun violence, and we seek preventative measures that will make Virginia communities safe to live in and to raise our families.

Firehouse’s 2026-27 Mainstage season is composed of four compelling, contemporary plays that weave together our nation’s history with urgent contemporary themes 🤩🎭:

Confederates by Dominique Morisseau, directed by Dr. Tawnya Pettiford-Wates
Two Black American women are having parallel experiences of institutional racism, though they live over a century apart. Tony-nominated playwright Dominique Morisseau's exacting new play explores the reins that racial and gender bias still hold over American educational systems today.

Floyd Collins Book by Tina Landau; Music and Lyrics by Adam Guettel, directed by Katrinah Carol Lewis
This haunting musical, featuring a glorious folk and bluegrass-inspired score, tells the transcendent tale of a true American dreamer. In 1925, while chasing fame and fortune by turning a Kentucky cave into a tourist attraction, Floyd Collins himself becomes the attraction when he is trapped 200 feet underground.

What the Constitution Means to Me by Heidi Schreck, directed by Chelsea Burke
This hilarious, hopeful and achingly human play breathes new life into our Constitution and imagines how it will shape the next generation of Americans.

Witness the true story of John Mitchell, Jr., the “Fighting Editor” of the groundbreaking Richmond Planet newspaper, as he fights tooth and nail to save an extraordinary man’s life. Set in the heart of Jackson Ward, America's original Black Wall Street, PRESS asks: How do we demand justice under impossible circumstances? And when everything is at risk - what do you dare put in print?

PRESS is the culmination of the John Mitchell, Jr. Project - a multi-year research and development collaboration conducted in partnership with the Virginia Museum of History and Culture and the Richmond Planet Foundation.

Meet the masterminds behind Safety!🔥

🎭 Irene Ziegler is an actor, playwright and author. She is two-time fellow in Cadence Theatre's Pipeline New Works Initiative, mentored by the multi-decorated playwright, David Lindsay-Abaire. Firehouse Theatre will produce the world premiere of the musical SAFETY in July 2026, music by John Winn.) Irene's full length plays include RULES OF THE LAKE (Mary Roberts Rinehart Award), FULL PLATE COLLECTION (Theresa Pollack Award for Excellence), and THE LITTLE LION (commissioned). CHIMBORAZO HILL was nominated for the Susan Smith Blackburn Award, was a semifinalist at The Road Playwrights Festival, and the Audience Favorite at the Appalachian Festival of Plays and Playwrights. Irene is the author of two novels and eight collections of monologues and short plays. She preceded Siri as the voice of techno-navigation and airport announcements. She was once yelled at by Anne Bancroft. 😆

🎭🎶 John Winn grew up in Richmond theater as a child actor. He has since built a music career that has included a variety of composing opportunities - but none more exciting than this collaboration with Irene Ziegler! John works regularly as a pit musician for regional and touring Broadway productions and has served as music director for shows at Virginia Repertory Theatre (RTCC award, Musical Direction, DREAMGIRLS). He also stays busy as a performer (singer/saxophonist) outside the theater, and received Richmond Magazine’s 2005 Pollak Prize for “Outstanding Vocalist.” He has performed more than 25 times at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, and has performed/taught jazz workshops in countries as diverse as Cambodia, Russia, South Korea, Mexico and Turkey.

The founders of Firehouse set out to make the theatre a creative hub for the performing arts community. This idea of service, now expressed as a core commitment to synergistic collaboration, is still central to our organizational identity today. 🔥

Did you know that up to 20 weeks of Firehouse’s producing calendar is devoted to its resident companies? Did you know another 30 nights (and sometimes more) are reserved for independent artists and ensembles through Firehouse Fringe? Did you know Firehouse devotes 7 weeks to the War in Pieces festival, bringing the stories of Virginia’s Veterans to the stage in support of the mission of the Virginia War Memorial? Did you know Firehouse builds at least 1 set (sometimes more) for a fellow non-profit in service of a production at a different location under a different banner? This means that in some capacity the Firehouse venue or Firehouse staff, is engaged in supporting the work of others (on top of producing its own Mainstage season and new play readings and workshops) for about 240 days a year. You will be hard-pressed to find another producing organization that spends nearly this much time lifting up the work of others.

If you take advantage of the rich diversity Firehouse has to offer, or if you are proud to have a producing organization in Richmond that provides unparalleled support to its fellow arts makers, then please make a donation to Firehouse before the fiscal year ends on June 30th. If you have made a contribution already, there is no rule against making a second if you are moved by what you just read. If you have not yet made a gift, we want you to understand that you are an essential ingredient to making it all work. Roughly 50% of Firehouse’s revenue comes from contributed sources, and a significant part of that is individual donors, just like you, stepping forward to invest in this organization that invests so heavily in its community.

Don't miss your chance to see the 27th YES! DANCE FESTIVAL!

YES! Dance Festival brings national companies together to present original
works which engage audience members to experience new ways to think about contemporary dance and theatre. 🤩

For the first time, our festival will include Emiko Nakagawa, a Japanese tap dancer currently based in NYC.

Our guests include Eric Rivera and K Dance from Richmond. Other companies include: sarAika movement collective (NYC), organi city (Texas) and Megan Mazarick (Philadelphia).

More than 200 dancers and choreographers have come to Richmond for YES! Dance Festival. Richmond audiences have witnessed incredible dancing as well as an abundance of creativity. Since 2008 K Dance has attracted guests from Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch” and this 27 th annual production includes two from that list: Emiko Nakagawa (NYC) and Rebecca Margolick (Vancouver, BC).

Every year YES! Dance Festival receives amazing comments from reviewers, audience members and cast members: “I haven’t been able to stop talking or thinking about it”, “whole program was outstanding”, “thank you for the fantastic, wonderful, uplifting, talented, professional, unique, and captivating YES!”
