"Welcome to The Garden, a perfect place for young black women to grow and thrive. But when one of the sisters, Bride, receives her summoning to depart the sanctuary, an encounter with a strange fruit causes her to question what might be waiting for her on the side. An anthology about black womanhood in today's America."

Firehouse’s robust devotion to new plays is unique in the RVA ecosystem, and actually extremely rare in the American theatre. 🎭

During our 2025-26 season, from our MainStage programming, to our new play development initiatives, to War in Pieces in partnership with the Virginia War Memorial, to our new play partnership with JMU, more than 75% of our programming budget was devoted to developing and premiering new plays.

Feel free to poke around, but I promise THAT. IS. RARE.

In many cases, whether Witchduck, Safety, or the John Mitchell Jr. Project, we are investing in these shows for years before we start seeing a return from ticket sales. That means we need YOU to support the journey. A donation to Firehouse is a demonstration of your belief in the value of creating new work that examines the world we are living in today.

Visit www.firehousetheatre.org and make a contribution before our fiscal year ends on June 30th, and champion the creation of new theatre. 🤩

Yesterday was National Tap Dance Day- named in honor of the legendary tap dancer (and Richmond native! Bill "Bojangles" Robinson. We are thrilled to feature tap dancer, Emiko Nakagawa in this years upcoming Yes! Dance Festival!

With a multitude of accolades, including multiple international tap dance competition awards, Emiko has firmly established herself as a leading figure in the world of tap dance. Her credentials feature performances at esteemed venues such as The Joyce Theater, 54 Below, World of Dance, and Jacob's Pillow.

Recently named by Dance Magazine as one of the industry's "25 to Watch", we couldn't be happier to have Emiko join us this year where she is sure to captivate audiences! You don't want to miss this - get your tickets asap!

How many of us are there? How many people consider themselves “Richmond theatremakers”, or at least “theatremaker-adjacent? Is it 250 people? It is 500?? Is it MORE?!? 🎭🤔

I think if you consider ALL the little ecosystems in our expanded community, the part-timers, full-timers, and hobbyists, and the generations of artists that call Richmond home, maybe we are close to 1000 strong.

I love the precious exchange between our theatres and our artists…. The theatre provides the opportunity and infrastructure for the artist to shine, and the brilliance of the artist, in turn, makes the theatre shine. It is easy to assume that this exchange with your favorite Richmond theatre will always be there for you. However, in the last several years we have seen beloved institutions close, pause, cancel productions, and navigate financial instability. It’s rather easy, in those moments, to point fingers at the institution and its leadership. But what if instead of pointing fingers, we embraced the POWER of our collective investment? Could artists actually hold the missing key to ensuring our organizations remain financially viable? I believe we could.

Theatremakers (and theatre-adjacents), today I ask you to ACTIV8 to support Firehouse. You may not consider yourself part of the donor class (I know I don’t), but the majority of us can spare $8 per month to support this beloved, longstanding institution (skip one trip to Starbucks every month). If all 1000 of us set-up recurring donations of $8 (only $96 per year), it would be an additional $8000 per month, totaling $96,000 per year in additional support, helping ensure the precious actor/theatre exchange lasts well into the future.

If you already donate more than $100 per year to Firehouse, thank you and keep it up! If you can do more, do more! If you do not yet donate, and need to start conservatively, please ACTIV8 today, and spread the word to your friends and colleagues. “Set it and forget it” as they say, and collectively, we will change the economic outlook of this beloved theatre.

It takes two minutes to set-up your monthly recurring donation at www.firehousetheatre.org
