Tonight, discover two distinctly Oregon stories—one rooted in the vineyards of Southern Oregon and the other in a mysterious world of art, machinery and imagined history.

🍇 This Week’s Story: Spangler Vineyards

Explore the remarkable journey of Pat Spangler and a small Umpqua Valley winery celebrated for its bold Bordeaux and Rhône-style reds. Spangler Vineyards was named 2018 Oregon Winery of the Year and recognized as the 2025 MVP—Most Valuable Producer by the Oregon Wine Awards.

⚙️ Artist Spotlight: Museum of Techno Art

The fascinating traveling exhibition Exostoria Mechanica: Lost Fragments continues throughout the gallery. Created by nine artists, the exhibition brings together mysterious mechanical artifacts, industrial materials and retrofuturist inventions—each suggesting a fragment of an unknown history.

Look closely. Ask questions. Imagine what these objects might have been—and the world from which they may have come.

The exhibition continues through October 10, so tonight is also a wonderful opportunity to explore the artwork at your own pace.

🍇 COUNTDOWN TO VINTAGE NIGHTS — THIS FRIDAY

From a sheep farm in Ohio… to the trading floor of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange… to an award-winning winery in Oregon’s Umpqua Valley.

This Friday's Vintage Nights story is Pat Spangler and Spangler Vineyards.

Pat's route to winemaking was anything but conventional. His interest began with home brewing, followed by visits to California wine country and, eventually, a move west. In 2004 he purchased the former La Garza Cellars near Roseburg and began building Spangler Vineyards into a winery particularly recognized for big, expressive reds.

And the awards have followed.

🏅 2018 Oregon Winery of the Year — Wine Press Northwest
2025 Oregon Winery of the Year
🏅 2025 MVP — Most Valuable Producer — Oregon Wine Awards
🏅 More than 25 Platinum awards reported over Pat's career
🏅 Double Gold — 2021 Cabernet Franc — 2025 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition

That Cabernet Franc isn't an isolated success. In 2021, five different Spangler reds earned gold or better at the Great Northwest Invitational, further cementing Pat's reputation as one of the Pacific Northwest's notable red-wine makers.

There is history in these bottles, too. Spangler works extensively with Bordeaux and Rhône varieties, while the winery's range has included less-common Oregon reds such as Carménère, Dolcetto, Petit Verdot and Nebbiolo.

Jonathan approaches each vintage as a creative expression of its season and place—combining Old World traditions with New World techniques to create wines as individual as works of art.

🍇 DID YOU KNOW?

A red grape doesn't necessarily have to make a red wine.

Tomorrow's Vintage Nights guest, J.P. Valot of Valcan Cellars, proved that rather spectacularly.

In 2019, J.P. took Malbec—the deeply colored grape synonymous with his native Argentina—and made it as a white wine.

The result was Bare White Malbec, recognized as the first commercially released White Malbec in the United States.

How?

The color of most red wine comes primarily from contact between the juice and grape skins. By gently pressing the Malbec and quickly separating the juice from those deeply pigmented skins, J.P. could ferment it as a white wine.

But he didn't stop there.

J.P. has continued exploring what this single grape can become: white, rosé, traditional red, sparkling, pét-nat, piquette and other interpretations.

His fascination eventually became something bigger.

J.P. founded Malbec in the City, bringing Oregon producers together to demonstrate how Malbec responds to the different soils, elevations and climates found throughout our state.

That's viticulture.

That's experimentation.

And that's part of the fascinating story of modern Oregon wine.

Where Art Meets the Vine

THIS WEEK'S STORY: VALCAN CELLARS

What happens when a winemaker raised in Mendoza, Argentina—one of the world's legendary wine regions—makes Oregon his home?

This Friday we're going to find out.

We are delighted to welcome Juan Pablo “J.P.” Valot, winemaker and co-founder of Valcan Cellars, to Mindpower Gallery.

J.P.'s journey to Oregon began in 2001. Raised in a multigenerational wine family, he brought with him an education in enology and viticulture, Old World family traditions and a curiosity about what Oregon's remarkably diverse vineyard regions could produce.
More than two decades later, he has become not only an Oregon winemaker, but an active advocate for the industry itself.

A few things you may not know about J.P.:

🌿 He was appointed to the Oregon Wine Board and later chaired its Standing Committee on Research.

🏆 Valcan's 2015 Syrah was named Best of Show Red at the 2019 Oregon Wine Competition.

🍇 He created Bare White Malbec—the first commercially released White Malbec in the United States.

🇦🇷 And he founded Malbec in the City, bringing Oregon producers together to explore what Argentina's signature grape can become when grown in Oregon.

But perhaps our favorite part of the story is the name.

VALot + CANcel = VALCAN

J.P. and his wife and co-founder Doris Cancel combined their family names to create Valcan Cellars.
Their two-bird emblem was inspired by Taíno/Arawak imagery honoring Doris's Puerto Rican heritage alongside J.P.'s Argentinian roots. The touching beaks form an infinity symbol—a representation of family, heritage and the legacy they hope to pass to their children.

That is exactly what Vintage Nights is intended to explore.
Not simply what's in a glass, but where it came from, who made it, what they learned from the land, and how Oregon's wine culture continues to evolve.

Et Fille means “and daughter.” The winery grew from the shared passion of father and daughter Howard and Jessica Mozeico. Today, Jessica continues her father’s vision as owner and winemaker, carrying their family story into the next generation.

Curious about the wines? Friday nights are designed to discover the story behind the winery and learn a little more about what’s in your glass.

Meet the Artists — Dutch Mostert & Allen Thornton

Friday is also our special Meet the Artists Reception for the Classic Car Exhibit.

Meet Dutch Mostert, whose remarkably detailed paintings and authentic vintage hood-ornament sculptures celebrate the artistry and design of the automobile, and Allen Thornton, whose photography finds color, character and beauty in the forgotten machines of another era.

Their very different approaches make this an especially fun exhibition to explore—and Friday evening is an opportunity to meet both artists and talk with them about their work.

THE STORY BEGINS

🍇 Oregon Wine Has a Beginning. This Friday, We're Telling the Story.

Before Oregon became internationally known for wine, there was Richard Sommer.
In 1959, Sommer came to the Umpqua Valley with an idea many people thought simply wouldn't work. In 1961, he planted Vitis vinifera at HillCrest Vineyard—among the first post-Prohibition plantings that would help launch Oregon's modern wine industry.
He experimented with 34 grape varieties, including Pinot Noir, pioneered the use of stainless-steel tanks in Oregon, and helped prove that fine European wine grapes could thrive here.
His influence reached far beyond HillCrest. People who would become important names in Oregon wine passed through its doors and vineyards.
Today, the DeMara family carries that history forward, into another generation. We are looking forward to Brian coming and pouring these wonderful wines from the DeMara Family.
