This year's Chili Cookoff proceeds will be donated to lifelong Raymond resident, Conan Moe. Towards the end of December, Conan was bit on the arm by what they are guessing was a spider. He became extremely sick and in horrible pain, so he went to the emergency room. He was told that had he waited any longer to get to the hospital his organs would have shut down and he wouldn’t have survived. Even after many days of treatment, the infectious disease doctor told him that he would most likely lose his arm. Fortunately, his body started to respond to the antibiotics, and they were able to save the arm. He was released from the hospital but had a long road to recovery. Conan doesn’t have health insurance so he was not able to see the specialists that he needed to help the healing process. He was also turned down for any type of help from the state or government other than a very very small monthly amount from state disability. He didn’t qualify for food stamps, welfare, even MediCal. Because of this, he fell behind on his mortgage payments. He is hoping to be back to full time work within the next couple months, but for now we are hoping to raise some money for him to get caught up and back on his feet.
Entry forms will be available at the Raymond General, as well as 50/50 tickets. Please consider entering, attending or donating an item for the silent auction. This is always a fun event that goes to a good cause, but its success depends on our community coming out and donating by purchasing a tasting ticket, raffle tickets or bidding on the silent auction. We hope to see everyone out again this year!
