🏈 The National Football League was founded in a car dealership in Canton, and the men who did it reportedly sat on the running boards of the cars because there were not enough chairs.

On an evening in September of 1920, representatives from a handful of scrappy professional teams crowded into Ralph Hay's automobile showroom in downtown Canton. The pro game at that point was a mess. Teams poached each other's players midseason, colleges were furious about students playing for money on Sundays under fake names, and nobody agreed on anything. What came out of that showroom was the American Professional Football Association, which a couple of years later renamed itself the National Football League.

The first champion was not Green Bay or Chicago. It was the Akron Pros, who went through that first season without losing a game. Their best player was Fritz Pollard, a Black running back at a time when that was rare and dangerous, and he would go on to become the league's first Black head coach. Opposing crowds treated him badly enough that he sometimes had to dress away from the stadium and leave the field under es**rt. He kept playing anyway.

All of it happened in northeast Ohio, in front of small crowds on muddy fields, with nobody involved having any idea what they were starting. Di
